My Creative Week Not a Square finished

"The Northern Lights are not square"  17" X 22"
The prompt for Project Quilting this week was "not a square" and I got so into my concept that's about all I worked on, but it's finished! The challenge is to start and finish a quilt in one week following the prompt.

it started Sunday, from the improvisational flying geese, made from cut offs from doing the pineapple blocks last week. I added in other tiny triangles and just sewed, one after the other, watching colors grow, trying to get into the zen of it all. Until I made 7 long geese units, and said, Heyyyy they aren't square!

what to do with these??? I pulled out two beautiful Caryl Breyer Fallert fabrics to put between them, and had the concept of Northern Lights. That meant I would have to not only piece the strips together with improv curves but the tops and bottoms of each strips set. Since they are different lengths, in order to keep the height differences...

Lots of design decisions... angle, color placement, distance between geese sets, and I chose two gradation fabrics so I had to decide when and where each one went.

the center is pieced!

When I pieced the geese sets I didn't realize how this was going to look.

Now I wanted something on the top and bottom... and decided these would work

time to quilt this!

a mix of cotton, rayon, and mylar metallic threads would do! More decisions!

a few close ups... don't forget these images enlarge when you click on them!

whee! color! I quilted in some more triangles top and bottom, stars mixing glittering strands with cotton for texture and depth.

The binding was put on one side at a time, to match the fabrics, and not take attention from the center.

it was a real challenge to get finished, and along the way I started another piece I'm very excited about. I didn't want to rush that one I decided. It will wait for another day but I'm very excited about it.

Both of these are forcing me to use special fabrics that are no longer available.  I haven't even started my SAHRR for this week but have an idea what I want to do...

I didn't find out the color for Rainbow scrap challenge til too late to do a block, but the geese in this are done from lots of green scraps!

time to put away the unused fabrics, the threads back in their boxes, and start the next thing!

I am so impressed that you were able to make this quilt in less than a week. Love that you combined flying geese with CBF fabric, since she took geese into flight. It was worth putting SAHRR on the back burner for now.

What a perfect name for a superlative quilt. It's better to use favorite fabric than to have it sitting on a shelf. The northern lights made a rare appearance at home last week. Of course, I was in FL and missed it. Oh well, at least it's warm and sunny here and not icy and cold. I hope Milo'a toe heals swiftly.

Your quilt turned out amazing! I love how you have quilted extra geese to extend the shapes into the background. Lovely work!

Absolutely fabulous’. The colors are just like the photographs I’ve seen of the Northern Lights lately! I’m still blown away every time I see your improv flying geese!

This is absolutely gorgeous! So many design decisions that could have gone wrong but instead went right into creating this beauty. Love your sewing table, by the way. So big! Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.
