sewing saturday

welcome to this week's sewing round up! Lots of finishing going on this week and some RSC lime green scraps used too. The picture above is the Purple Mountains finish.. 

I'll show some close ups while telling you about it. I started it a few months ago and got inspired to quilt and finish it this week. Lots of metallic sparkling threads, free motion quilting and some flowers...

I combined two fabrics for the binding, sewing the one color along the bottom, a special batik with green and purple on lime... love it... and leaving long tails to join the blue done on the top, later with diagonal seams.

I came up with a way to do speedy improv flying geese with this quilt... should I do a tutorial? 

I'm showing closeups so you can point and say, "I have that fabric!" like I do when I see your scrap quilts, lol

look at the flower scrap... love that, and the little free motion flowers. When approaching something like this I started with strips of geese, then decided how I wanted them in the composition, and filled in with free form curves. 

Color and line are equally important, as well as pressing after each seam

i like that the little low contrast mountain top showed up...

 

 

I learned a few things with this...

there are many paths up a mountain... choose one and commit to it. 

more is better 

make the geese stand out with color changes

consider lines when adding in scraps

opposites on the color wheel are dynamic, purple and green

don't sweat the small stuff... keep sewing... straighten it up now and then

now on to the RSC lime project for this week... some blocks done last year, the hand sewn star blocks, and the improv log cabins... what fun to combine them!

first I sort of figured out how many were sort of the same size, then started moving them around the stars... I did this with two other colors so far, and have sections done. I know this puzzle making process now!! I started sewing one block to another, then seeing what fit to that, adding in when needed, cutting off when less is needed...

I'd estimate about half of these are sewn together now... while I've been listening to the book on audio in my studio space. 

Do you do chores in between sewing sessions? our washer is upstairs next to the studio so I do laundry, I stop for walks, have lunch with dh, come down the wicked stairs for water refills to keep moving, go out to throw the ball for Milo 

There's a cool show on Prime called making the cut... with Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum about designing clothing, I've really been enjoying the second season on now. 

 did you know you can watch Marianne Fons show on youtube? I really enjoyed watching how McKenna Ryan does her fusible applique technique here...

sewing saturday... purple impro log cabins and two finishes!

 

Welcome to this week's sewing round up! Starting with my two little friends. 

I LOVE elephants and watch videos to calm myself... so when I saw someone made an elephant applique quilt I began searching the internet for patterns. 

I decided to download two free coloring book pages to make a pattern, and then thought, how about a felt stuffie? I have some cute felt scraps in dots, and pink with white dots...and found a free pattern which I put on word to enlarge a bit. I cannot find the pattern online again, and the maker did not put their name on the page, but you can look for them online. 

 

You will need a little experience putting in gussets. I added in some crystal eyes, and some floral embellishments, a metallic thread tail and they are my studio mates now!

The color of the month at RSC is purple, and Angela encourages us to make something using our purple scraps so... back to the purple improv log cabins:

 

little scraps, probably should be thrown out, become these lovely uneven log cabins. Amazingly enough the white bin is getting pretty low!

when they were done, I just sewed the really small ones together and look who showed up!

then these starts to an improv landscape of purple blossoms in grass... can you see it?

the big finish this week was this small artwork

I wanted to do a trial for a larger blossom quilt,  and I learned a lot. On freezer paper I sketched out a heart and star then drew swooping lines over that intersecting the image. I wanted to see if a change of fabrics would interrupt the shape, and it all worked out great!

 

I carefully cut each segment out, and used it as a pattern on fabric that was already backed with fusible. 

as I cut them, using scraps so color didn't matter, I put it back in place. Then I put each piece onto a foundation muslin and fused it down . I learned I should not butt them up against each other but allow for some overlap next time.

I replaced the pattern as I did this. Then it was time to layer with batting and backing and quilt it!

I used neon rayon thread and a satin stitch around the swooping lines. I used a variety of colors, and stitched in straight line echo changing directions to emphasize the lines of design, then free motion spirals and pebbles for fun. It's about 9" X 12". Trim after quilting

 

and face, meaning sew binding to edges, and pull the whole seam to back so you don't see binding.

 

iron on some crystals and done... now for the blossom quilt in my pink flower series!

don't you love it when things turn out to make you happy? This makes me happy!

I know I posted about sewing and showed three quilts yesterday, but today is my usual Sewing Saturday so I'll show you the design wall. I made some bright green improv log cabin blocks to go with the two colors from Rainbow Scrap challenge so far.

I made one with a mix of orange and green, just because.

I really like this process, adding strips and seeing how it develops.

I've been going through UFO's and found these

On this first pass through the UFO piles, I'm tossing obvious outdated projects, and putting things like this in a bin labeled (for now) parts dept.
Some cool stuff has found it's way into that bin!

ooo I like them spaced out on the table cloth... hmmmm

I discovered these little EPP hand sewn tumbling blocks. You need three shades of a color for the effect, so with the orange bin already out, I made up some block sets and sewed them while watching tv (and snow pile up)

They are amazingly fast to baste behind the diamond papers, and to whip stitch together.
I think I'll make more.
