Creativity round up with lots of pictures!

 welcome to this week's creative round up... the index card a day prompt was PLAY so I printed out three of my fave toys from childhood and the word in French, collaged them, and painted around. I wrote on the back as I am doing each day...

I am using a pretty hinged box to store my icad art... the one lying on top is from the prompt cyanotype

Mostly this week I was immersed in an embroidery workshop, (Embroidery Summit) 7 instructors a day X 5 days! I'll share some work in progress... it was my goal to learn new techniques and go back to finish them after the week was done. I used an old cut up blue shirt from dh, and scraps of fabric... I also used a painted piece of fabric as a base to work on through the week, adding to it daily

I experienced many forms of embroidery, like sewing through paper... I painted a figure on first

crochet... then slip stitching a design over, now that was fun!

>Ribbon embroidery... done differently than I've done in the past.

pet portraits... first trace the main lines from your own pet's photo, transfer to fabric. My error was in not using water soluble stabilizer to stitch through... it's gummy when soaked so I used tearway and it pulled on my stitches. 

It's not finished of course, there wasn't time to finish any project... but I learned...

I learned split stitch, and different ways to stitch leaves and branches...bouillon stitch several ways, turkey stitch (the fraying one) woven flowers combined with satin stitch

I'm highly excited to make delicate floral sprays with tiny french knots onto back stitched branches. I have something like these growing in a pot on the patio, but not this glorious variegated blue color!

a lot of teachers wanted to have us do the woven flowers but they are messy and eat up thread... so I stopped early here and finished with an outside row of lazy daisy stitches, and some golden French knots. I love the little bird... and want to finish this one. 

One of my favorite stitches is the leaf overlap stitch... very effective in variegated green thread. 

I have an ongoing love of French knots so making an entire flower head of them was lots of fun

I'm reminded that satin stitch isn't my favorite to do as it never quite looks full enough but this bee is going to look great... 

the 3-d pom pom flower is fun too!!!

last but not least is in honor of RSC to use bright blue scraps this month... a lesson in overlapping scraps and embroidering them into a finished piece....

gathering scraps and threads and extra's to couch down

the object is texture... silks, fraying, couched yarn, different stitches. Very collage, very messy, very abstract. There is difficult to use thick gold thread, sheers, boucle yarn. I repeated triangles in stitch as well as fabrics, in different angles.

now what to do with that??! a piece of that blue shirt made it's way in too!

I was mid binding and sleeve sewing on the Leaf Study... so it can be shown next week. For now, I think I'll stitch on these projects a bit more, but return to painting the coming week.

I Like Thursday # 302

 

this week's list of likes is short... I like our flowering bushes (not our allergic reactions) and it's summertime in the Mile High. Hot and getting hotter. 

I've enjoyed painting this week, three samples of floral pictures...

and sewing this week, the embroidery workshop is going on all week...even on paper!(more onSat)

I did a workshop on meditation, growth, and writing with Kelly Blaser this week, and at one point we all discussed the concept of "wait..." sometimes you must wait for answers or healing...

because it's hot and summer and lemocello was made for times like these...

 the prettiest rendition...

 love this song, never knew the name. Caravan... makes me want to paint in long strokes.

Milo's Moments

 Milo: we had an adventure this week! Daddy started playing with that scrary twirling thing that spins over my head every night. I decided if he was gonna kill it I had to be there!!!

 Daddy: Milo it's a fan, it helps cool us at night

Milo: well it's scary! I look up at it all the time to make sure it stays up there, however it stays up there while moving around!!

Heyyyy, I'm on the big bed before Mommy! better stake out my claim now! Mine!

color in my world this week

 

I spent 9 hours a day on a drawing and painting workshop this week, and am exhausted but I wanted to share just a few things today, tomorrow and Monday... for now this is the bit of sewing I'll share

the block is from this pattern, and I'm doing one a month in the rainbow scrap challenge colors... this month is bright blues (I just love elephants)

 

speaking of rainbows... it is the prompt for today's index card a day prompt challenge. 

the challenge this week is to interpret the prompts in collage or acrylic paint. I'm not an enormous fan of acrylic paint as it dries too quickly here, but I like to stretch. Being a word lover and writer, I jot a few notes about the day, the process, my thoughts at that moment on the back of each card and have a journal now! Some are very personal, some are less...

Here's how I approached the Prompt "Rainbow" at first I thought, love is love, so I drew a heart... and as I wanted it off center, I put it on scrap paper to draw the complete heart so the lines would be continuous

then I took my tubes of acrylics and daubed  three on the image...

I've ruined some palettes and brushes with these paints so I cut up a yogurt lid to make a squeegee and dragged it over the blobs from left to right and daubed the excess onto another copy paper sheet.

I went over the pencil lines with black acrylic and a liner brush, and tested it first on this sheet too...

doggone if I don't love it! It's exuberant and a total accident. I especially like the top left color whatever that is, with the black random arches. I forgot I like drawing with a paint brush too!

I'll leave you with this one I ended up loving... the prompt was collage, and "pictograph" which I chose to interpret with ancient cave painting like handprint, for hand made

this was a painted coffee filter my friend Sonja in Hawaii sent me... I tore it and glued to the index card. Then cut out a hand from freezer paper to use as a resist (as mine is much larger than an index card)

I used acrylic paint in ochre, on a cotton ball, and daubed over the hand to look like the ancient paintings I've seen, with ochre blown around the artist's hand on rocks.

a bit of ink dots, and writing on the back, and it was done. I love doing this daily, while drinking my coffee, in my pj's, starting the day in color. 

Sonja told me how she uses filters to daub up leftover paint, so I set to using one this week during my painting lessons... then just started painting it on purpose and ended up with this...

collage goes on for a few more days... but these are going to be fun to use! 

I wonder what I'll make next? It's all good...

I Like Thursday # 301

 

welcome to this week's short list of likes. I love that this wildflower seed took root at the end of last summer and came up unexpectedly in the rocks in front of the planter. What perseverance that took, and will to live, not to mention bringing beauty into the world. Thank you.

so I'm busy in several art workshops this week, and exhausted but wanted to at least check in with you all and say I'm grateful for you as well as mention a couple likes...

I'm doing the index card a day challenge with prompts and LOVE working in this format. This was from day 6 prompt "daydream"  I love her humanity... and a couple years ago I didn't think I could draw. I've worked at it and love drawing now. 

Root

 I love the post CLICK HERE I wrote spontaneously this week about the word Root, and would love you to read it and tell me what you think...

I am writing on the back of these cards daily, and it's been wonderful to do, a real record

One day at the computer, I looked up and the sun cast a shadow past my plants onto the far wall... wowie, what a cool moment. I grabbed my camera just in time...the earth keeps turning (because it's round, yes it is) so it was like a tiny momentary gift for me

I have made good friends through this blog... and love to be able to send my daily paintings to a few of them for feedback... and I learned about Austin Kleon from Angela, new to the I Like group... 

I not only signed up for the free friday letter but another one too that's new to me, and very creative

comments are still hit or miss.I live for them but ... sometimes they come to blogger but not to the blog, or maybe a lot get really lost. Sad. Technology changes seldom are better for me, I don't know what the techies did but if you really want to reach me, and I'd love that, please email. Addy is on the side somewhere up there=>

We sowed wildflower seeds into big patio pots and they are starting to sprout, hope they are as exuberant as last year!

We're reading, watching shows on tv, and eating but nothing outstanding today...

I still love color...

Milo: it's hot. I'm hot. but I am playing with my new toy...

there is a squeaker in every leg! They set the challenge by calling it indestructible... of course it's been in this house for a couple weeks and still has it's legs! (mama ordered it from amazon) and every night now I want some rabbit treats hidden in my wishbone so I can get them out! Whee!
