I Like Thursday # 450 bikes, birds, painting, and pears
here it is Thursday again, and here I am with a short list of likes to share.... starting with
The mixed media workshop online (free) on Willowing.com which has inspired me to paint... the image above is a thumbnail close up of the whole picture done one morning while waking up. The full photo will be on my creativity round up post Saturday (with others)
I try to live a creative life, and being in that mind space provides me calm, peace, and excitement.
Music Love
Just LOVE Burt Bacharach's music, always will, enjoy it here. He wrote the soundtrack to Butch Cassidy and sundance kid (I had such a massive crush on both stars of the movie)
the song playing at the moment I took the photo was "anguish of choice"
those words resonated with me.... I do not like making choices and yet I like having choice.
saying yes to one thing means saying no to another. I have really enjoyed this music in the mornings
I noticed three beautiful pears in the bowl on the counter, and thought, I could paint some pears with gouache.... I took about 8 images to use later. Inspiration is everywhere right?
We had several days of rain, and all flora and fauna were happy for it, and I spied this couple thru my back door....
She and He, taking turns having a refreshing bath
again, I took several images and loved this one
Conversation Starter for the week
National Bike Month – Do you know how to ride a bike?
When did you learn? Did you fall and get skinned knees? Did you
ride with other kids? Ever ridden a two person bike?
It all started with a big red tricycle under the Christmas tree, and little LeeAnna was off to the races!
Bumping on our uneven sidewalks up and down the street. Furiously pumping sturdy little legs, leaning into the wind, laughing at the joy independence brought.
Next was a real bike, tall, frightening, with little training wheels to help me find my balance. Bump, bump bump as I banked from little wheel to little wheel. Then, magically no bumps as I rode faster, more sure, centered.
I had streamers on the handlebars, a bell that only I rang, you stopped by pedals back and I admit I took a number of falls along the way to my new level of independence. No parent ran along beside me, they bought me toys then removed themselves from the area. I hated skinned knees, and the inevitable mercurachrome sting.
A neighborhood friend had a small bike I liked to ride, closer to the ground. I found a small blue rusty car in our garage out back, probably from my sister's childhoods, with pedals to pump, a steering wheel to control, and I loved that little convertible.
like this but old
One year I was gifted a surrey. With dangling fringe on it's roof, with pedals and a steering wheel, that I loved.
But that Schwinn bike... About middle school the country saw fit to tear down houses across the street from ours, and proceeded to build Interstate 75 that would eventually run up to the top of the USA. Back then it was mainly piles of leveled sand, that we could ride on to downtown Tampa!
I ran in high school, and marched in the band, danced often, and left the 10 speed behind. I rode it temporarily again when I met an important boyfriend while in college, and when he came to visit we rode bikes in the early evenings. We didn't stay together though, and the bloom was off the bike for me
I do not think I ever rode a tandem bike.
One of our neighbors in Maryland had a son who rode a unicycle for a while!
Well, thank you for sharing those memories with me... and I'm always interested in your stories!
Please visit these fine folk, to read their likes this week, and if you write a post let me know to link to it!
And now you've made me hungry for a banana muffin! The pears look delicious too and I would imagine we all had tricycles when we were little. My grandfather gave me my first big girl bike. I was 6 or 7. I got on, he held the back of the seat and said pedal pedal pedal. I never had training wheels.
I still cherish the Bacharach and David music book (for piano) I got for Christmas one year. Good music never goes out of style. Oh I loved my big tricycle! My brother was a year older but I mastered his new bicycle before he did. My parents worried it would hurt his self esteem, so bought me the biggest trike they could find to try to keep me off his bike! It worked and I loved that tricycle. Loved “parking” it and driving it like a car. Yes, I had Schwinn bikes too. Thought the S on the seat stood for Sally. Had double wire baskets on the back of my first one because I rode it to school every day. That was back when no one locked their bikes. Later, I got a ten-speed Schwinn that went to college with me.
My quiet mornings are usually spent with my coffee and yogurt in front of my laptop before my husband is awake. That's when I usually read blogs, but avoid the news.
Oh man - I spent a LOT of time on a bike! We had a red boys' bike that I learned to ride on even though it was too big for me as a 5 year old. I would get on from the front steps, and would stop by riding along side the vines growing up the front of our porch and grab onto the vines. Drove my mom crazy. Guess that's when my parents bought me a more appropriate bike. Living in a small town, I spent hours and hours riding bikes around town with friends. Wonder how many miles we put on those bikes? And I still have the scars on my knees 60 years later! The summer before my sophomore year in college I spent some of my summer job money to buy a really good 10 speed. I rode that for several years. Thanks for triggering some great memories!!
I always liked Burt Bacharach's music - so many really good songs. As for riding a bike - I don't remember how old I was when I got a two-wheeler complete with training wheels. Living on a farm meant that the only place to ride was up and down the lane. Of course there were lots of potholes and rocks that would get tangled up in the training wheels and down I'd go. I hated pain so the bike got put away for several years until one day I decided I was going to ride that thing even if it killed me. I took the training wheels off and got on and rode it with no problems. Training wheels were a bust for me, that's for sure.
Yummy banana muffin and those pears look like perfection! We love seeing the birds in our bird bath, too - they look so happy and seem to get so much pleasure out of splashing all that water around. I loved your stories of your growing up with different bicycles. I can't actually remember actually learning to ride a bike, but of course I did. Getting to ride your bike over to a friend's house or to the shopping center gave such a sense of freedom!
I like that Burt dude's music too. You are very creative and it shows. Hey, I had a little car like that blue one but mine was yellow. Thanks for joining Angel Brian's Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!
I got a bike for Christmas when I was about 10. We were living in northern Indiana and it was so warm that I got to go outside and ride it. I rode that thru high school until my brothers got a hold of it and pretty much destroyed it by jumping it over homemade ramps in the front yard. I bought a used bike for $15.00 when I went to Ohio State for a year in order to get across campus. I couldn't take it home with me so I willed it to my roommates. Years later I bought a Schwinn when my car was in the shop and I needed transportation to get to work. I rode that bike all over town for years. I put a baby seat on the back and took my son for rides. I am now horrified to think that neither of us wore helmets! I just recently bought a new bike. My Schwinn was just too big for me since I am a bit older now. It was too big when I bought it, but back then they didn't have different frame sizes. My new bike is sized for short me and has some battery power to get up the hills in NE Ohio.
As a child I was the youngest and when my siblings had bikes I had a trike that I loved…..i never really rode a bike. I’ve enjoyed your post today. Hugs, Annie x
Great story today. Believe it or not I have only been on a bike once in my life. My father had one but I walked everywhere so didn't really need one, we only lived in a very small village. Sorry I'm late as we've been out for a while today. Have a good weekend. Hugs Angela xXx
Burt Bacharach is an amazing composer! I could sing along to a lot of beautiful songs he composed. I like your Quiet Morning. It is still playing now. I will turn that on in the mornings so I can slowly wake up. Thanks for the suggestion. I love your bicycle memories. I grew up in the Netherlands where everything happens on a bike. I learnt to ride a bike when I was really small on a bike with training wheels. Then when I went to secondary school my dad bought me a new bike. It was a BSA Wayfarer (https://function88.wordpress.com/2015/11/23/bsa-wayfarer-c-1975/) and it was blue and it was utterly beautiful. Before we always had bikes with back pedal brakes. This new one had hand brakes. I had to cycle 12 km to school in all weathers (and 12km back of course). We did not have school buses in the Netherlands. Now I have to admit that I haven't riden a bike for many years so when my sister rented bikes the year before last and I went on a bike, I was a bit wobbly, but the weather was nice and I did enjoy it. Sorry for being so late. I had Internet problems, have a lovely weekend, Lisca
My mother loved Burt Bacharach, and so do I. It reminds me of her and the songs she sang. I had a Schwinn bike too, marched in the band (carried the flag) for a few years, but then settled into the yearbook. I can't believe it will be 50 years since we graduated...can't decide if I will go. Looking forward to seeing those beautiful pears painted by you!

I havent been on a bike in forever. It makes me wonder if I still have balance to do it. Loved my yellow Schwinn growing up!

The pears are pretty!
I had that exact red tricycle as a kid and found it in my parents attic last year. I also like your mixed media painting. Thank you for linking up.
