"I Like" Thursdays #10

In the effort to find joy in life I continue my series on "things I like" and hope you enjoy reading my choices this week.
The above image is from a flannel scrappy Thanksgiving quilt I made last year. I did it in the same construction process I used to make this year's Halloween quilt. I will explain the approach another time.
It's a big throw sized, perfect for tv watching!

I love Fall, and Thanksgiving sometimes becomes lost between flashy Halloween, and Christmas.

I like leaves, so how about this "Mitten Leaf" as a bridge from Thanksgiving to Christmas?

I like the Canadian tv show "Bomb Girls" (I watched on Netflicks)
It had great character development, writing, acting and history. I learned more about the strength of women, in trying times. The show introduced a bit of how women supported freedom during WW2.

Guess what's baaaaaack?
 Turkey Summer sausage!
Wonderful with crackers and a bit of hot and sweet jam (not with tzatziki sauce)

We recently realized this tzatiki sauce we like on gyros is available at the store.
It tastes fabulous! creamy and tart.

When we're being healthy we put it on cooked fish
When I'm home alone, I dip chips into it, heh heh (don't tell my husband that's why it's getting used up!)

Also back are the tall grass fronds for winter viewing
they look so frothy in a snow covered landscape

Last but not least, I offer this beautiful video of one of my favorite songs by Leonard Cohen

The song is "Dance me to the Ends of Love"  by Leonard Cohen, recently departed.
This video is one of the most stirring I've ever seen!

The horses running free reminded my friend Sonja of her Arabian: Lily
they are called "drinkers of the wind"   (what glorious imagery)

Oh! how lovely to be held in the arms of a man who is strong and sure, who respects you, who will not overpower you.... but one you can trust, knowing he will lead you through a dance.
I have such a lovely partner. (I love you Drew)

In case it doesn't play here please enjoy the song, and beautiful imagery in the: youtube video

Leonard Cohen left a legacy of beautiful songs. What legacy will you leave?
I hope to  leave beautiful words, artwork, & a clean environment.

I hope to have made a difference.

As always, let me know if you did an I Like post and I'll add it to this list: please enjoy these posts

"A Litter of Extroverts" A short story of love

A litter of Extroverts
Once upon a time there was a wee small cat family. The litter was small, only three kittens but they were highly interesting kittens.

Even as babies,  they were different… Not a one was shy.
They were special. They would lead extraordinary lives.
And one human lady met them all… here is her story:

The woman had just said goodbye to her beloved poodle-son as he returned to Heaven. She was sad and a little lost without him. She felt lonely with no soft hair to pet, no expressive eyes to gaze into. Life felt so lonely.

She took long walks. One day on such a walk she was taken by surprise when a bright sturdy orange cat ran toward her. Meowing loudly, it’s gaze was steady as it RAN toward her from half a block away!

This cat smiled as if it recognized her, and had been waiting for her for years!
“Finally! There you are! I’ve been waiting!”
This woman smiled for the first time in a long time.

The orange cat loved her and the love of another creature was a link to her perished poodle. The cat was thrilled to wind in and around her legs, purring, meowing, accepting and giving love.
The woman’s heart swelled with the connection.
After a bit she said goodbye to the little stranger and continued her walk. However, this cat was not done. He followed her matching step for step prepared to accompany her for miles. No leash needed to connect them. They walked on until, the woman became concerned that he might get lost or hit by a car. She told him this.

He sat and looked up gently into her eyes, understanding her reluctance to break the connection, and her concern for his welfare.
They looked into each other’s eyes for a while.
He remained there while she took steps away, turned back to see him watching her leave.

She marveled at this event for the rest of the walk, really she still does.

Miraculously she saw him again days later and they now met as friends! Glorious meows and hellos mingled with petting from both! Again he was reluctant to watch her walk away, following her a block. Reluctantly they parted, both looking back.

She let the good feelings of connection heal her broken heart.
Again she assumed they would never meet again.
But…

A third time, as she walked with a friend, telling her the story of the healing cat, he appeared. Again they met as friends, this cat sending a message that he loved her. Reminding her she was lovable.
She never saw him again after the third time but later met another from what she began to know was the litter of extroverts.

-2-
On another long walk, with her husband, in a new neighborhood, another orange cat appeared. She was stunned to see this one running toward her, meowing loudly,
“Finally! There you are! I’ve been waiting for you! “

Just like the first cat, this one loudly meowed, adding in some Mreep! Sounds. Just like the other cat this one was waiting for her with an open heart. This one wanted her. This one also walked alongside her til she reluctantly asked it to stay near it’s home.

As she turned back to check, there was no cat to be seen!

“ OH! She’s gone! Did I imagine her?”
Then she heard a loud Mreep! I’m here, do you need me? Stepping out from behind a hedge the cat said, "I’ll be here, I love you, you are lovable".
And she was there when they returned to get in their car, as if she hadn’t seen them in weeks!

“Meow! Remember, I love you!” The woman looked back as they drove away.
Happy and a bit sad.

-3-
The woman walked and walked for weeks, wondering would she ever see the healing cats again. Don’t things happen in threes? But week after week no cats appeared.
Until…

One evening a tortoiseshell cat ran toward her.
Mouth open, trying to meow!
He limped on an old paw injury, his tail was bent, he couldn’t sing like he used to.

He was old and bent from age, but love is ageless.
She wondered if his ears were bent from listening.
Again he ran to her, wrapping her legs in a caress. Tying her up to keep her there.

He tried to walk with her, stopping when she stopped, walking when she walked.

He was skinny under her hands, old and wise in the ways of the world, old in the ways of love.
Again she reluctantly explained he must not go far from home, and should be careful of cars. He looked deeply into her eyes, said he was old and knew that, but he walked by her side as long as possible.
He said, “I love you, you are lovable”

Later she learned, he lived nearby. He had lived in that house through two owners, and conveyed with the house.

“Oh my little friend, what have you seen? Won’t you give lessons in connection to humans who need to learn?”

-4-
She was content now, having met three.

Never in her life had this happened! It was a message of some kind. A litter of extroverts…not born of the same parents, not sharing a home, but all the same in a big way.

They all reached out to a woman…a walking wounded woman.
A woman who needed love.
And they gave it freely.

The woman, me, recognized how special these encounters were. I was reminded in a very real way just how love is shared. How meaningful the love is that connects us. We are different yet all respond to love.

One day I’ll find another poodle to love. The new poodle will not be Cole, as he wasn’t her labradaughter Chelsea.   Each bond has taught her about love.
Each bond told her she was not alone.

The end (of a true story)

Ps just as I thought I would never have another cat encounter, an orange cat met us in Frederick City this weekend

“Meow! Finally! I’ve been waiting for you!”
My husband and I looked at each other incredulously. Can it be? Again, he walked by our sides. This time he turned up toward a house and looked back as if to say, “if you lived here we could be together every day”

We considered that

A fall walkabout

On a recent walkabout in another city, my husband noticed this little pumpkin.

How Adorable!!!
Wish I knew where to find the bits to make one for myself!
We walked around a neighborhood like one I grew up in, with sidewalks and pretty homes like this
I liked just everything about this house. From the welcoming statue to the windows, roof shingles, and trees
and we tarried so long, the owner came out to chat, and his dog bolted out the door to greet us
that picture was taken on the run as he never slowed down. He jumped on each of us, and circled immediately to return to the house. I thought, well, a drive-by petting... but no, he ran right back for us with a big plastic ball in his mouth!! The owners had driven to VA to a kill shelter to take him the day before he was to be put to sleep. What a gorgeous animal, full of love and joie de vivre.
What breed is he? Big.

We met this cat who again ran out to walk with us for a bit

 MEOW!
Love!

I have written a short story about our magical meetings with cats, I will share tomorrow.

I hope you come back to see...

We had  lunch at  Crackerbarrel. For my friends around the world, it's Southern home-cooking style food and there is a gift shop in the entrance. They have moved on to Christmas including this for a BIG stocking
and imagine being a child who wakes up to see these under the tree
What a cool display for a fancy house too. They had lots of REALLY BIG candies.
My favorite item, of course, was the rocking horse...
  .........er..... rocking Cow...
Hope you enjoyed hearing about our little jaunt. Are you decorating for Fall or have you moved on to Christmas?

Working with your hands is soothing

Let's talk about artwork shall we? I need a break from worry.
Our wee family of two got in the car Saturday and went to three quilt stores on the shop hop. We started at Bear's Paw (sorry no purchases this time despite wanting one of each, please)
The above picture is my hexie quilt, still in progress. My take along quilt that's now King Sized! Final border blocks going on this section.
I pin them in place with safety pins to travel. I bought plastic inserts a long time ago and when it grew so large I began cutting my own templates out of  food lids. I really, REALLY like doing hexies this way.

We moved on to Patches in Mt. Airy and I gave in to the siren song that fabric sings buying these fat quarters
Check out the dogs! the snowflakes have silver metallic snowflakes embossed. The moons with beads. The most entertaining one is the musical hip cats...
These musicians are cool baby! Hep Cats!
We had lunch at Cracker Barrel and took a long walk in a town we like a lot. Pictures of that adventure to follow this week. For now, more fabric and handwork..
We finished the day, fighting DC traffic to get to Great Falls VA and Jinny Beyer Studio.
This is how it looked at 5:10 pm
welcome and come right in!
"One yard of each please" is what I wish I could say. Jinny and her staff are always kind and welcoming. As if I didn't have enough reasons to admire Ginny... a very accomplished pattern and fabric designer, a business woman, a great teacher, and a kind person... I was reminded of her great love of dogs. She has always welcomed our boy Cole in to say hi to the ladies, and he loved her.

Her eyes are very expressive and she looks at you when you speak... when I told her we lost Cole,  she began to tear up, and then I cried again with the loss of such a good boy.
She took time at the end of a very busy day, at the end of a busy event, to share our love of our dogs. She cried with me.

I asked after her baby, now a three year old black lab. He's "great and so smart" she shared, "he seems to just know where I am in the house at all times"

I did want a yard of all fabrics, and one of each kits but left with these two one yard cuts of sale fabric
Color! Glorious color! And pattern. I also got the little light up magnifier for my purse, to help me see better

A few items I made by hand this week include this bracelet...
My talented friend Cindy showed me how to do the herringbone stitch with beads and crystals.
It feels good to learn something, and wear something I made.
Fall colors, using the leftover crystals from my last bracelet.
A server at the restaurant cooed over it and wanted one too. It's fun to wear something you make.
In fact I'm still toting around my Halloween tote.

I also got out some fat knitting needles and used this really fluffy hairy yarn. No idea what it would be, and just started knitting. It's soothing to feel soft things. It is too short for a scarf, but could be joined into a circle to slip over my ears on a walk.
Sometimes making something is therapeutic in the making even though you don't end up with a product.
Know what I mean?
The common thread in these projects is repetition of movement, use of thread, and beautiful colors.

"I Like " Thursdays scenes from a craft show

I wrote this post before the election results were in. I would not have been able to write it today but I let it stand. I hope the person elected is spending the day learning the constitution.
There is a street festival in Annapolis the first Sunday of the month. We enjoy walking around, the artists, the pizza, the music, and oh my goodness, the dogs. I interviewed several artists this time. Among them was a man called Tim Dorland (his site is tdmosaics.com)  He makes mosaics with glass not tile. I noticed the guitar first
He found a $10 beat up guitar, and couldn't leave it. He sanded it, painted it shades of green, then embellished it with stained glass. Note the beads holding the strings.

It no longer holds a tune, but it holds meaning with all the grapes and vines, the sparkle and whimsy.

I also like that surfboard! I asked if making art was a sideline or is he a working artist. He answered this IS his work life, and he supports himself and his son through his art. Bravo!! Visit him to see more.

A big part of the day is petting so many dogs. Fur therapy for me now that I lost Cole.
He used to love going down for this festival! This is merely one of a hundred scenes, but I like it for the mastiff (largest I had ever seen) and the chihuahua.

Note the baby. At one point the mastiff was looking right into the baby's face and the baby was silently peering intently right into the dog's face while the little chihuahua quietly watched. The people weren't watching but I was. I missed the money shot, but it's in my mind!
 Mental picture! Click!
We petted a few poodles and met a cute Bedlington Terrier (thye look like lambs) who took my heart.

I fell in love with the band playing in a courtyard, in the gentle Autumn breeze,
Caleb Stein and the Brakemen.
They won me over with their spirits. The band is tight, obviously played together many times. They play original music, that touched something deep inside. I like many forms of music, not always responding to country sounds, but these musicians are so good. So good, we bought a cd. So good we stood a long time listening to many songs, so good I felt I knew them.
Take a listen here if you like... this song described my feelings on so many occasions.
If you can't see it here, this is the link on youtube.com/

While walking around, this caught my artist's eye...
Something about the texture. The defined line, the edge and shape of the leaf against the neutral background. The background was neutral, but highly interesting with different sized pebbles in concrete. The subtle veins of the leaf.

I want to make a quilt with these colors. Subtle. gentle. quiet.

a visual respite from the worry of life.
Then the breeze caught the leaf and turned it over

Brilliant colors of fushia and lime and purple! My heart lept for joy. Lovely little gift from mother nature!
Speaking of color... we had to stop by the local quilt store (cottonseed glory) where a shop hop is in progress. A woman asked me about hexies, and could she use this fabric??? I took one of her paper hexies, and folded the fabric around it so she could see how it would look.
Glee! She nearly clapped her hands! She is a fairly new quilter, never done hexies, and chose a very elaborate pattern. As you know I like a hexie (ahem) and I like color, so I had to get a piece of this too.
RJR makes it the line is "geekery"
Whee! I nearly clapped my hands when I left with it!
(I am already sorry I didn't buy four yards instead of two)

That's it for this week... again let me know if you also did an I Like post this week.

While my guitar gently weeps... paper pieced guitars

I took a moment away from the little guitars and the rainbow scrap challenge  but am now trying to catch up with the guitar colors. Today I made a yellow/ gold one and a red one.
These patterns are from paper panache, and very intricate. I could applique one in minutes, but each block paper pieced takes over an hour.

That includes ripping out incorrect angles tho...

Want to come backstage for the audition process??? Well, follow me...

The finalists for the yellow guitar and the winners are...
The finalists for the red guitar are:
Note the pattern pieces cut apart.
I took the original pattern, cut the sections apart carefully, darkened their outside edges with pen, placed them apart on a sheet of paper, and used that to copy  the pattern.

The designer didn't allow for seam allowances, and I make more mistakes if I don't have seam allowances marked,  so I do that part myself.

The red was so brilliant before piecing but with all the little angles, mostly dark red shows. Still, I would love a red guitar, wouldn't you? The photos are darker than they are in life.
Click on the image to enlarge for details!
They are really cute all lined up. I may even sew the blocks together like this, with no sashing. I like them in a row.
(The paper is still on them, so they look wonky on a design wall)

I want to do a black one too. I have some black scraps with really glittery silver on them...

One sees so few banner quilts going sideways like this, but there are are places where this would fit well. Hopefully we'll find a house with room for a studio, and a music room.
And then Jake can come by and play for us...
Jake S. playing while my guitar gently weeps on a Ukelele

this video is awesome! This is a great video and if it doesn't play on your device use this link:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qw6YL_l2YxA

As to the inspiration for these blocks...ta da!   My husband Drew....

That's the youtube link in case you want to see him learning a Christmas song and can't view it here.

Well, the stores have had Christmas merchandise out for a month already!

"I LIke" Thursdays # 8 and a give away

COLOR!
Welcome back to "I Like" on Thursdays. I have to be honest, it's been a really hard week.
Life is like that. Which is exactly why this little post is important for me to do each week.
Here are a few things I did like this week and a small giveaway at the end, because I Like y'all.

1.Brianna's salad dressings. I am allergic to soy and corn and these have good ingredients for me. Even if you aren't allergic to those items, and they are hard to avoid in American foods, these taste great! We use them as dipping sauces too.

2. Brokenwood TV series made in NZ
This show is fabulous. We get the CD's from the library but I expect one can find them in other places.
The characters are developed and very interesting, the plots keep me guessing to the end, I get to see an area of the world I know less about, it's very well acted and great scripts, the only negative is there are only 3 seasons so far. I think it's still in production. We watched all the midsomer mysteries, like Miss Fischer's Mysteries, Really loved Broadchurch, so that's our review. Four paws up!

3. Books. Nothing new about my love of books, but I have more than I have shelves. I did a quick review of my cubbies, and said I was going to pull out at least one from each cubbie that I no longer needed.

Well that is harder than one might think. I find something in almost all books to like. Taste's change though, and needs change, time marches on and I find I really like working with scraps, making landscapes, or in general making my own patterns.

I was able to take out 12 books and maybe 20 patterns to release into the wild.
Great! I'll use all that new found space to put away the 75 books sitting on this chair

4. Fekkai Shampoo full volume. It smells nice and lemony and it plumps up my fine straight baby-bird hair.
It's found in lots of stores
5. Textured Yarn  I was gifted with a bag of textured yarn.
In honor of being able to live in a Democratic country and vote, (and women, we fought for respect, and  the right to be seen as real people and "to be allowed"  to vote, not that long ago)
I'm giving away this partially knitted scarf, and two balls of bright Red fringy soft yarn to anyone who wants it. If there are more than one out there who wants it, I'll draw a name in a couple days. I want to encourage you to "use it!" which is my motto this year.
While I'm at it, how about these little triangles in red and green for Christmas? Seam lines arked on the back in pencil. I hand pieced a few into some circles and I'm done.( I'm keeping my circles) (I'm going to applique them onto a pieced table runner)
Your turn... "use it!" for me. Then you'll help me not feel wasteful, and you'll carry on for some quilter out there who couldn't finish it.
If you want either of these, leave a comment answering this question:
How many UFO's will you leave behind?
(and tell me which you want)

 I'll start...
Approximately, a meeeeelion UFO's or at least a hundred. I finish a lot, but I also start a lot that go South.

I didn't start these triangles but you can finish them. Imagine with me now... (swirling music) what in the WORLD could you do with triangles? They can be appliqued, they can be pieced they could be made into little boxes to hold trinkets, pin cushions. The sky is the limit! I only ask you show me what you make with them!
As usual, I will link to anyone doing an "I like" post today... let me know, my email is up there
