Sewing Saturday Weather extremes from beach to sweaters!

Cabanas  45" X 19"
While sewing this week, in the extreme heat of summer (100F) I finished the cabana's quilt and made my sweaters in the RSC color of the month, dark blue! From coppertone to winter gear!

Above is my finished summer quilt (pattern Moda row by row book) quilted and ready to hang.

love the beach quilting effect!
So I changed up the pattern... I made the tiny snail's trail blocks but chose to offset and double them up to resemble waves approaching a beach. I took out one cabana to make the quilt slightly less wide (made a table scraps mug rug for my friend Lane with it) added in more sky, beach and water as well as fun prints. Also the cute flags were my idea and I think I might like them best!

I've been saving this tiny bi-plane scrap for years!!! Now it's perfect for this quilt, IMHO

The flags were just little triangular scraps of my fun "candy" fabrics, fused down with zigzag stitch

wide bindings finish it off! matching fabric in binding carries the image to edge!

I looked through my stash of prints to find summer things like pails, ball, umbrellas, little girls stand in for my friend Lane who's family welcomed me to come each year to their beach week hotel Sea Resort, and our catch phrase was "sea resort where everybody's happy!" and we were. Bikini's and coppertone, swishing palm trees and soft sandy walks, lemon juice in our hair and cooling off in the gentle rocking water.

On the other hand I also used dark blue to make some sweaters for the RSC project this year, and liked both prints

so I'll just keep them both for the moment! I'd like a sweater like this!

Remember going to the drive in movies? As a kid I wore pj's even though I'd go play on the swings during intermission! Sitting in a hot car in Florida with the speaker hanging on an open window, looking through the windshield to see the movie.

My collection is growing... I have to start thinking about how to showcase these. My idea is to float them on black and white fabric, and make a cute quilt to hang in the closet maybe...

I ran across Podunk Pretties video on how to make your own block loc ruler and HST guide... enjoy

I Like #252

Welcome to this week's list of likes... small ones this week, but life is made up of these!

I like coloring in my Joanna Basford calendar each week and I am enjoying the new set of watercolor pencils from Staedtler on this page. Usually I use prismacolor and they really have different qualities. More on this tomorrow on paint party friday I hope!

the page from this week

I like quilting on my cabana quilt this week, lots of pretty colors and threads

I loved this set of three videos of a small bird nesting, laying eggs, helping her babies to fledge. I loved the male shows up with food, they chat loudly for a while, Mama shows him the babies and he's out to hunt again!

It's been very hot this summer, and I'm trying to drink more water.  We like the britta filter and there is never enough for both of us, so I ordered these to keep one full and cold in the fridge while the filter cleans more

I have used one like this for years to keep our tea cold and they are a good size

I like reading            on Ebook

finished Relics on audio, and now listening to book 1 in this series after finishing #4!

Not before time, I took up the snowmen rug in front of the sink last week, and replaced it with this

in case you want to read about it. I washed it, it dried on the rack in an hour, it does not slip and is nicely padded as well as protects your floor from water. I think we'll get some for the doors. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B091F14H16?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

Our tupperwear was taking on the dishwasher soap smell and putting it on food, so we ordered these glass containers for leftovers instead. So far so good (we found them at Sam's club)

I like these towels we got at Sam's club made by Martha Stewart... very lush and inexpensive. In fact they are so nice we ordered more!

they are a rich blue and white

I Like Watching on TV

just finishing up Beacham House on Masterpiece... so beautifully filmed, and the costumes!!!
Fantasy Island is returning to a new season, I like The Chase, Make It, Kominsky Project, and others.

I like eating! ... I made this sweet potato/spinach/coconut milk curry soup and it was restaurant worthy!

 Milo's Moment

I'll be with you as soon as I get this neighborhood under control!!!

There was way way WAY too much booming this week, all week. Stupid humans!

they've all gone in now but I think maybe I should still be on duty in case someone needs barking at to keep them moving away from our house! Go visit mama's friends and see what they liked!

sunday questions party

From the party of questions  Sunday Stealing:

1. 3 things I love (maybe more than 3)

my wee family members of a husband and standard poodle, fresh good food, clean air, tv, books, sewing and art, walking around old towns looking at architecture, history, pecan pie, freshly laundered sheets, birkenstocks, peace and quiet

2. Last song I listened to

just before my old 5 cd player (it shuffled randomly between 5 cds) died last weekend I was listening to a great mix of Celadon Woods and CSNY.

3. Turn offs

loud cars, smoke, hateful words, selfish people who demand their way and ignore needs of others in this crowded world. Smell of sweat, staring at cell phones,  refusal to learn

4. What color underwear are you wearing right now?

turquoise ( thanks for asking)

5. How many tattoos do you have?

yikes, none! I'd never be happy with the same thing on all the time, but I used to do the temp ones on my ankles in the summer, and had a great time changing them.

6. How many piercings do you have?

I only have two but they have closed up. I got a second hole in one ear while on a trip to San Fransisco in my 20's. It tormented me for years til I gave it up. A bout of severe allergic reactions to chemicals started when they stained our cedar home one year, and I became unable to wear any earrings since. Sad.

7. Meaning behind my URL

I love color, I make art, I note color in the world. I belonged to a group that made art quilts and one woman said sardonically, one day, while looking at my latest artwork, "it's a shame you're afraid of using color" and bingo! There was my blog  moniker.

8. What I find attractive in other people.

gosh... I love integrity in all forms. People who are unique and respect others who find other people interesting become very attractive to me. I tend to think all my friends are beautiful... maybe I am influenced by their intelligence/humor/acceptance and only see their beautiful spirit shining out.

9. Something that’s currently worrying me.

I had an allergic response to the first Moderna shot, and my doctor said not to risk another ever. I'm terrified of catching it and being in hospitals. My husband had both shots but I'm scared of the people at his work who don't believe it's real and didn't get shots and he catches it with no symptoms and brings it home to me.

I'm scared for all the people who rather support one human than the whole country. I'm scared when I hear them say they hate... govt or people. Any large group needs governing, it's a way of life. We all have something to offer and should all be respected and allowed to contribute. If a group hates someone of a certain skin color, they will hate another for their religion, another for their sexual orientation, another for their gender, etc. Hate is dangerous.

10. Something that’s constantly on my mind.

what to make for the next meal... now that I have to cook all the time. I got so spoiled with take out food over the years. Also how to avoid injury since the least little knock or stumble will cause my discs to pinch my nerves and so much pain. Speaking of getting older... where will we find peace to live out our lives? (and can afford it)

11. My favorite store.

I love to shop, and used to have fun in Pier One stores. I like Macy's, I love container store as I feel I could possibly get organized if I buy enough containers. I most love a quilting store and we used to stop at them along our path when taking car trips.

it's so silly but if you can't be silly in summer... then what???

 12. What I did yesterday.

I finished up the top on my latest quilt, and tried out my new staedtler watercolor pencils on paper, (NICE!!), did laundry, groceries, cut the poodle's toenails (a big job/wrestling match) then treated his latest ear infection, made chicken fajitas and set up leftovers for lunches, watched a time team and an episode of Beacham house and a bad movie (Hampstead) while enduring the endless fireworks being shot off around our house. Fireworks started Thursday night, then Friday night, then Saturday night, and I betcha tonight, the actual Fourth of July will not be the last night of them this week.

13. My favorite blog

I can't pick one, I love this group. I also love the group of people keeping a list of small things they liked that week meeting on thursdays here at my place. They have become friends and my community. Come join us! "I Like" Thursday (last week)

14. Someone I miss

I miss my friend Cindy whom I got to visit with every week in Maryland. I miss my friend Lane and Suze in Florida, Bonnie in Maryland, game night and contra dancing in Maryland. I miss the woman who took care of me and provided safety and love as I grew up, I called her Tatee. I miss her the most.  If I know how to love it was because she taught me. If I have grace towards others and follow the golden rule it's because I watched her live with grace and always be kind.

15. Reason why I follow Sunday Stealing

I LOVE to join the feeling of a party like atmosphere where we share what we think

Sewing Saturday just beachy!

Welcome to this week's creative round up! Painting + Fabric + Sewing! I will start with my playdate on zoom this week with Joy

I got out some stamps, ink pads, and several ink pens and pencils for fabric. That's how the images looked stamped on muslin

using these. I stamped the face image (Jane Davenport) and used two leaf twigs around her head strategically to look like hair. Colored the image in

prismacolor pencil plus fabrico markers

and she's so pretty!!! The Laurel Birch stamp (from a scrapbooking convention years ago) of a dog and cat was colored in with these inexpensive fabric pens available at JoAnn's

and I didn't like the harsh colors despite blending... til time passed and the colors migrated to fill in and blend in a lovely way by end of evening. We'll see what comes out of these two pretties...

Now for the real work done this week on my cabana's quilt. My calendar page this month is a beach/cabana scene, which made me chuckle as I was really into the piecing this week.

remember the Moda Row by row book? and snail's trails?

I made more snails trails using the color of the month at RSC, blue again, and my scraps, but decided to set them differently in my quilt. I got out my cute candy fabric collection to make cabana's along with so cute footprint beach fabric, seagull fabrics and pretty beige prints

The pattern is for a long skinny row, and I thought, that's interesting for over the mantel. Then I decided 8 houses were too many, so I removed one. Instead of one long skinny row of snails trails I put them over each other but offset a bit

and added in some cutie pie fabrics from my ocean collection (I used to live near oceans). It was a week of decisions, since by now I had totally abandoned the pattern.

I began thinking of what might be on this beach and cutting out fun motifs like seagulls, shells, umbrellas, fat ladies in inner tubes.

Just before I stopped for the day, I had most of it put together including the biplane that flies over beaches trailing banners,

and maybe some happy little flags fluttering over my cabanas, just scraps stuck up there at the moment, and two girl friends wading by the edge...

in honor of my beachy quilt work on cabanas this week, enjoy this 1899 enhanced film of the French beach with cabanas!

I Like #251

welcome to this week's likes.  I write this the night before and I've had two episodes of ocular migraines right when it was time to write... I'm sorry but it's a short list...

I liked this little small watermelon this week, so fresh and sweet.

I loved the zoom with Joy when we both played with paints and inks this week. More on Friday.

LOVED finishing my book, funny, smart, entertaining and finished before the library grabbed it back!

First Comes Scandal

 we watched the movie

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (film ...

it was a wonderful movie... about: In the aftermath of World War II, a writer forms an unexpected bond with the residents of Guernsey Island when she decides to write a book about their experiences during the war. Indomitable spirit of a group of friends, surviving the fascist regime. Lovely acting.

sewing Saturday table scraps and new projects

Welcome to this week's sewing round up!

Let's start with my Table Scraps offering for this month... a table runner in purple for the rainbow scrap challenge color of the month.

just playing with the units before adding geese units

I made two art quilts from some improv blocks made a year ago, plus lots more pieces sewn in! The mountain piece is a finished top waiting for quilting. The leftovers from that, plus improv flying geese units turned into the table runner above.

close up during quilting, before it was finished.

I did a lot of quilting on this, and pulled the border to the back and hand stitched it in place for an edge treatment.

finished close up
Thank you to Joy at thejoyfulquilter for the impetus to make this!

I put the little quilt above on Thursday's post in detail, but mention it here as I found this little table top stand this week, and put this on my cutting table as inspiration. It's all painted on white muslin, with blue sparkly borders.

Ending the month in purple are some wine bottles for that project. I like them!

I looked through some of my books this week, for a quick summer project, and decided on the little beach cabanas with blue snail's trail blocks...

I didn't realize the block was just 2.5" so it was very tedious and the scraps needed to be higher contrast and less patterned. Live and learn and move on.The centers are 1.5" 4 patches... but I did get to use a lot of leftover tiny triangles out of the scrap box.

I just jumped in without realizing how small they were. I do not want to make more so I'll fill in with some cute water prints under the houses.

I also pulled out two painted pink flower tops ready to quilt so watch for those!

I've watched a few videos on The Quilt Show this week, and more on making art and painting. It's all good for creativity!

have a cookie before you go... made from my fave chocolate chip oatmeal recipe, with chopped pecans added in this time
