halloween questions

questions from Sunday Stealing Party (https://sundaystealing.blogspot.com/)

 1. Have you ever played with a Ouija Board?

of course! we used to regularly use them at pajama parties growing up!

2. Favorite horror monster or villain?

I do NOT like horror shows... how about gomez addams

3. If you were dared to spend the night in a “haunted house”, would you do it?

Inadvertently I did... we stayed at an inn in Sonoma and the light came on in the middle of the night surprising both of us! We both thought the other one did it but the hostess told us next morning that it was their ghost.

4. Are you superstitious?

kind of, I have several hold overs like tossing salt over a shoulder, or not putting hats on chairs, etc

5. Do you ever see figures in your peripheral vision?

now and then I think I hear someone call me... and suspect it's a spirit or angel

6. Ever made a potion of any sort?

chocolate martini count?

7. Do you get scared easily?

yes!

8. Have you ever played Bloody Mary? no

9. Would you ever go to a graveyard at night?

I quite love graveyards... I find them historical gems. Ghosts would be at the places they died probably if they couldn't move on to Heaven. My fave graveyard is in MA

10. Would you rather go to a Halloween party or go trick or treating?

I loved T or T ing for the variety of candy, and seeing everyone out but love a party even more, with costumes and games. My fave candy used to be sugar daddies caramel bars.

11. Whilst watching scary movies, are you the person who yells at the characters, the person with their eyes covered the whole time, or the person who falls asleep

I run from scary movies, mute ads for them, not interested in reading those books either

12. Favorite scary book?

discovery of witches
13. How old were you when you saw your first horror movie?

14. What was your first Halloween costume?

now who can remember being dressed up as a baby? I do remember begging for a store bought (cheaply made) princess costume with mask... and I had little girl elastic strap high heels to wear under it.

dh and I used to dress up in matching costumes, put chairs outside and a table to hold our creepy goblets and bottle of spiced red wine. We'd give out candy to kids and little paper cups of wine to parents.

15. If you could have a spooky Halloween pet (black cat, owl, bat, rat, wolf), what would you pick?

black cat for sure... I am allergic overall but love cats and have always had black dogs. I'd like to give an owl a chance but they need to live wild, bats kind of scare me. A wolf is cool, and I've known people who just love their pet rats but I'll stick with a black dog

how would you answer these???

sewing saturday table scraps autumn

Welcome to this week's Sewing Round up!

Remember all the scraps from making the kaleidoscope quilt a while back, and I made all I could into 60 degree triangle blocks like this one...

then tried to arrange them into a new to me configuration

about 21" X 50"

Here it is quilted, and ready to use!

I would show you some of the other configurations but I'm afraid I liked one of them better (in hindsight which is 20/20)

I like the strong but interrupted vertical lines of scraps and the triangle lines that show up as well.

It was too narrow so I added in the center strip of precious hoarded leaf fabric...

I found a cute brown backing fabric in the stash,  of coffee beans...

since it's almost 50" long I needed more fabric, so I  inserted one I love...

Not particularly a lover of tan or brown, I have always loved that little rose and brown print, and think it looks kind of French

the edge was covered by bringing the excess backing to the front and hand stitching it.

It looks very nice on our table bringing the colors of the outdoors in for the season

thank you to Joy at https://thejoyfulquilter.blogspot.com/2021/10/october-2021-table-scraps-runnertopper.html  for the inspiration to make another table topper!

I'm finished quilting the next piece and in process of binding it. I suspect I'll call it November's table scraps finish so it will be a while before I share that. I plan to work in neutrals for November, so stay tuned to see more scrappy love around here! For now... this was full of ideas...

paint party Friday

welcome to paint party Friday when we watch paint move around on paper

this week I did one plein air painting,  some expressive work in a workshop, and three bookmarks

made from this tutorial by Shayda Campbell... so easy...

I tore a sheet of watercolor paper in fourths and painted. Now I think I might want to add something else maybe... crystals? threads? and send them to friends.

I was inspired by the sprinkler in our back yard last weekend to paint something to capture water droplets...

the workshop I took wasn't all I hoped for but it did cause me to start this

we were to add a section a day for the 8 days, but I went off on a tangent. The blue section represented the flow of creativity, the rocks are roadblocks and I labeled my roadblocks... then on the next section I added in how to get around the roadblocks...

the last section on this side was to imagine your crown of power if you were queen...

by now I was done with the course but on the back I'll put something now and then, I quite like the format of accordion folding stiff paper and painting in sections to stand up on a desk.

quote from Ave Mateiu

I thought I'd put the phrase, reality is overrated but when I googled color quotes I saw this one:

"Broken crayons still color" and it resonated with me. I am not as good as I could be, or paint as often as I'd like, my supplies might not be just right, my body is broken, my spirit is skint, but I can still paint. I can sew, and write and tell a joke.

what does that phrase mean to you?

I found all bran cereal again finally and made a batch of muffins from the recipe on their box... adding in applesauce (1/2 cup) and some apple cider... OMG as good as I remembered them! this was my go to breakfast food to take to gatherings when I was a young working woman. I've already made a second batch in a week since we all three love them for breakfast!

aaaaand we've finally been able to eat something we planted... lettuce. Of course we have to put it to bed in the garage at  night but it's really good. Living lettuce from whole foods, eat the lettuce then plant the roots.

after harvest of plucking it's still living!

speaking of kitchens we finally got a spoon-tula and love it ! Kind of like a flexible spoon but also can lift things and stir well, and scrape a bowl very well too!

 Milo's Moments

yes! Mama's making a cheesecake!  I'm first! If you need that last cookie put away...

Milo: Hi everybody! I want to tell you about a fun game I play with Mama every night.

Mama: er, what game is that honey?

Milo: YOU know, where I look right at you and send you messages you never get?

Mama: you mean where you appear right in front of the TV and stare at me til I put down the ipad or look at you and smile? Then you wag your tail furiously and turn around and back up on me like you're about to sit on my lap? That one?

I wonder....What are you trying to say?

Milo: I don't always know either, but something! "Look at ME! Let's play! Give me a chewbone! Go outside! Feed me! " one of those probably although when I'm tired I just want you to pet me a bedtime story.

Mama: so I'm supposed to go down the list and try each message til I hit on the right one?

Milo: ...or get it right the first time, but you're not excellent at that are you,...... Mama?

Mama: hmph... yes baby?

Milo: I luuuuuuuuuuuuuve you! That's the main message!

look at me I'm a "Poo-bra"  or a Zee-doodle

sewing saturday

welcome to this week's sewing round up! Lots of finishing going on this week and some RSC lime green scraps used too. The picture above is the Purple Mountains finish..

I'll show some close ups while telling you about it. I started it a few months ago and got inspired to quilt and finish it this week. Lots of metallic sparkling threads, free motion quilting and some flowers...

I combined two fabrics for the binding, sewing the one color along the bottom, a special batik with green and purple on lime... love it... and leaving long tails to join the blue done on the top, later with diagonal seams.

I came up with a way to do speedy improv flying geese with this quilt... should I do a tutorial?

I'm showing closeups so you can point and say, "I have that fabric!" like I do when I see your scrap quilts, lol

look at the flower scrap... love that, and the little free motion flowers. When approaching something like this I started with strips of geese, then decided how I wanted them in the composition, and filled in with free form curves.

Color and line are equally important, as well as pressing after each seam

i like that the little low contrast mountain top showed up...

I learned a few things with this...
there are many paths up a mountain... choose one and commit to it.
more is better
make the geese stand out with color changes
consider lines when adding in scraps
opposites on the color wheel are dynamic, purple and green
don't sweat the small stuff... keep sewing... straighten it up now and then

now on to the RSC lime project for this week... some blocks done last year, the hand sewn star blocks, and the improv log cabins... what fun to combine them!

first I sort of figured out how many were sort of the same size, then started moving them around the stars... I did this with two other colors so far, and have sections done. I know this puzzle making process now!! I started sewing one block to another, then seeing what fit to that, adding in when needed, cutting off when less is needed...
thanks Deb for the star pattern!!!!(https://vtquilter.blogspot.com/)

I'd estimate about half of these are sewn together now... while I've been listening to the book on audio in my studio space.

Do you do chores in between sewing sessions? our washer is upstairs next to the studio so I do laundry, I stop for walks, have lunch with dh, come down the wicked stairs for water refills to keep moving, go out to throw the ball for Milo

There's a cool show on Prime called making the cut... with Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum about designing clothing, I've really been enjoying the second season on now.

did you know you can watch Marianne Fons show on youtube? I really enjoyed watching how McKenna Ryan does her fusible applique technique here...

so that's about it for now... leave a comment to say Hi...

paint party Friday

Welcome to paint party Friday where we celebrate liquid color!

this is a view one morning on our walk... the sun was just right, and I liked the composition. I had to use dh's phone to take the photo because I didn't expect to see such an inspirational sight on a routine walk.

I really wanted to try to paint the feathery texture, the see through stems and the gold tipped fronds at the bottom... how to do that with watercolor?? I started with this one...

I didn't have the photo in my computer yet, so I painted it from memory. I used KOI paint, waterbrush, staedtler pens, pitt marker and white gel signo pen. Cheap paper torn in half.

some close ups...

then I painted one onto my calendar to try to capture the feel of the fronds...

I really liked it more than the first one. DH and I discussed what we'd seen and he said it was like a solid wall of white fronds. I said but a painting is best when you relate to it, and there is poetic license.

I got the photos, that you saw above transferred to my computer after this, and really looked at them. We walked over there again and I studied the scene from several angles, really trying to see what was there in detail.

This is the third iteration while looking at the photo

Well, the proportions are off... but the exercise of painting the same inspiration view three times was good to do

there are aspects I like, and some I do not when I compare it to the other two

While doing a free online 8 day workshop with Amber Kuileimailani Bonnici, here are two items from the first day

done on sketchbook paper, inspired by the mental meditation

she had us fold a sheet of watercolor paper into accordion fold and paint anything on the first page that was inspired by the meditation,

I felt like exploring pink and purple, then some golden yellow

I thought it looked like a sunset when viewed sideways

then just a little painting one morning on my calendar pages

I hope so...
