creativity round up Happy Easter/Spring!

 

Happy Easter/spring y'all! 

For sewing this week, I have two things to share, Bunny and a sketchbook cover both  finished! 

Last week I showed my twinkle blocks, but I might not have shared that I made tiny 3" pinwheel blocks from the cut off's making the twinkle blocks... they were hanging around on the design wall, when I put my finished hand embroidery up there...and it was a good match!

I was smitten with the whimsical line drawing by J. Steves and wanted to use my pretty embroidery threads... it didn't take long to finish the image, using a couple stitches learned on Sarah Humphrey's video of how to make 5 flowers with two stitches https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cv-gfXsJebM

I sewed the pinwheels to each other, then onto my finished bunny piece, put a strip of hand dye under for balance. Quilted sparsely by machine, so as not to take away from the hand work, and bound in same hand dye

Used some prisma color pencils for blush! For my RSC friends, I used a pink scrap for the background as it had some kind of cool embossed design of flowers, pink scraps made the pinwheel blocks. 

the embroidery design didn't have all those stitches on the dress... I just played with cross stitch for "smocking", and lazy daisy with french knots along the hem.  Chain stitch around dress and a mix of outline and back stitching on the body.
 

 

 Last week I finished the sketchbook cover with hand embroidery too, and this week I quilted it onto stiff peltex  with my cool "painting blobs" fabric to line it. I added in some black and white to define the front.

I sewed on some elastic to hold the folded thick paper to paint on, 



 

and put a cute VW bug on as a closure

 I finished my Ebook and audio book, thank you to Diann for telling me it was part of a series so I am looking for the other books at our library... sadly they seem not to be available. I'll keep trying but am reading book two in the Nantucket series now 
 
I like this saga. And listening to this on audio but it's not holding my attention

Milo: Oh my dog... really? I mean I like them and all but that's not what I'm smellering. Did you know we dogs have really good sense of sniffs ? That's why I insist on sniffing the corks from your wine bottles. And licking them. I'm the official taste tester of this house as my pawrents will eat weird stuff like lettuce and bananas.

Sewing round up and one painting... in pink

 

For this week, I have several projects to share, some in progress, one finished and one painting. 

I have many creative interests, assuring I will always have something fun to work on! I am deeply into painting this week but took some time out to make some Twinkle blocks for rainbow scrap challenge. 

I made the smaller size of the twinkle star but wanted a larger one. The tutorial is  HERE 

While I was at it I made one in each color of the month so far


The focus color of scraps for April is pink... yea! 

Continuing on is my painted fabric hand stitching collage... I stitched it mostly while zooming with Joy this week, the tine flew by as it does when you are in the company of a good friend. I once said I had become despondent about ever seeing friends in person again, and Joy said, we ARE together. 

It's true, she is on the east coast and I'm in Colorado, so this is THE best way to share our lives when so far apart in physical distance... 

This piece is about 10 square, and painted fabric bits laid over each other, then hand stitched down with various stitches...
 


A while back textile artists had us paint fabric, cut it up and hand stitch. I got out my painted fabrics scrap box and made two (and a half, that's another story) pieces from the scrap box and like them a lot. 

the edge treatment is a buttonhole stitch with some beads attached in one corner and on the bottom

It is meditative and soothing to hand stitch for me. No plan, just seeing color appear on the surface with pretty hand dyed threads, feeling the texture develop. wondering how it would look with a button or bead. 

I think it's an exercise in letting go really. If it isn't to my liking I add more and keep going. Kind of like life itself... and I'm using my supplies.

for a break, while finishing one audio book (cooking with picasso) which was awesome read to me complete with French bits, then starting a wonderful new audio mystery 

I mindlessly put together some batik triangle shaped scraps with some black ones into this...

Don't know where it's headed... but it was soothing to make.I lost track of time in my book... which means I lost track of worries and bodily pain too... which is a side benefit of creating

Mostly this week I painted. I am trying to explore all the lessons in Scrapbook Revival before they disappear, and have learned so much this time. The top lesson is to take the lesson even if it seems not relevant to your style... each time I have gone ahead and done the exercise I have learned and grown

I painted this not from a lesson but because the supplies were out, I wanted to see pink, and I felt beaten up by all the violence by humans in our world this week...

All the colors get along, each one enhancing the whole. And there is room for gold to sparkle on top

i like Thursday # 291

 

welcome to this week's list of likes... starting with my love of art and sewing. I painted this strip a while back, but pulled it out this week to go on a spring banner. More on this later

 more painting on fabric, and a new collage put together by machine and handwork which I'll show Saturday...

Reading:

Just finished a fabulous audio book... the story takes you on a trip through France to the US and back, is a mystery on several levels covers three generations and explores relationships. I loved it

 

Still finishing up but dragging my feet as it's so enjoyable... laughing, crying, loving this story

 

next week I'll have a change of reading material as I finished one of these and only have 10 more pages on the other

Ahhhh Sketchbook Revival... I'm doing my best to see all the videos and do all the lessons... I'm REALLY happy to report I'm using my supplies... so many I haven't been brave enough to try til now. 

I will share a couple of the lessons here today... more later as it's picture heavy

this lesson was sketching with graphite (pencil) and adding gold metallic paint
 
this one is in sketchbook on thin paper
I'm kind of insecure about just using pencil... like I must add color or I feel it's not shadowed enough

I love the next one on watercolor paper...

One thing learned was to scribble on the background, which adds interesting texture

Another thing learned was that my golden paint, (finetec) must have a drop of water put on in the pan to reconstitute the paint about 5 minutes before using. I was going too fast and it came out transparent but this is LOVELY. I also like the black and white of using pencil

really look at colors in flowers, then go wild!

just watching the world go by.... I like that I survived another torture session where parts of me are cut off

Mama: MILO! It's just a haircut! 

Milo: and a bath, cutting toenails, digging around in my ears, standing still for hours...

Mama: stop that! you get lots of breaks to run around and pets and treats and feel good, and look better

Milo: heh heh, I do like being clean and all the treats and having my bedding washed... I also like that it has been cooler the last few days, and I get cake sometimes. 

Mama: that's because it's oat flour not wheat, and bananas and sugar. 

Milo: bananas! ewwwww, well you hid them well under the sugar!
