I Like Thursday # 232

 

welcome to this week's list of simple likes! I love oranges and now that I'm baking again, love using fresh orange peel. I used to use the microplane but now will use this one. Much easier. 

I zest it onto freezer paper, fold up and freeze til I need it.

My friend Cindy shared this recipe with me... Oh. My. heck! it's so good. I used cooked chicken strips for the protein, it has sun dried tomatoes, cream, spinach and parmesan!

Jocelyn from Canadian Needle nana shared a chocolate cake recipe, using stout, and Baileys, a while back. We made it for V-day and it is so GOOD! It's kind of big too so we'll be having it all week!

I tried this recipe for cinnamon buns, easier to make as there  is only one proofing and they were beautiful... a bit drier than last time. I used the kitchenaid dough hook to knead them this time.

This week, I did a line drawing, finished my V-day painted heart, and am working on the Project Quilting snails trail for this week's challenge. I like making art.

Social

I had a great time chatting to friends this week, including my local art quilt zoom, and zooming with Joy! I'm relieved my friends in Texas are okay after their extreme weather. It's been cold here, even down to about -17F one night, lots of snow but then we expect extreme weather.

 

Milo's Moments

It's been cold around here, so I had to wear my boots... I do not like wearing boots, and after coming back in I have to lick my feet clean of their smell, which takes a long time. Almost until it's time to put them back on to walk again!

 I've been given a small pillow to sleep with at night, so I now have a big one to keep me from falling and a small one to rest my poodle head on. I like it! 

Mama's been teaching me a new game, I'll share that next week! I like learning.

sewing saturday

 

For this week's sewing round up, and two challenges, I'll start with my painted heart. Sometimes I wish I would not start my experimental sessions with scraps. It helps to reduce creative stress by thinking I won't be wasting any material but then if I like the outcome, I have odd edges to deal with. 

more later on that one.. this is the design wall I saw all week:

1. painted heart
2. round robin --checkerboard row
3. wine bottles in RSC color of yellow
4. sewing all the odd scrappy log cabins together around the endless diamond blocks
this is a free pattern on the Moda fabric site. My plan is to make two a month in the rainbow scrap challenge color (yellow) and at the end of the year make a long table runner with them for Joy's "Table Scraps" (inked in the word mead, appliqued a tiny bee, word fabric on the other one)

it's challenging to put together improv log cabins made in all different sizes! But fun like puzzles are fun. These are in two big panels now!! Can't decide how large the finished piece should be, how many of my other 10 endless diamonds (from happy to be scrappy)  should be included

the "stay at home round robin" row this week is checkerboards

I wanted my squares to be a bit different so I made kind of a "rick-rack"  shape with them

then I thought, I like them but that background is a little too busy... so I made another row with the same dots I used behind the geese last week












 

and something isn't quite looking right... they all match up, they were all fussy cut and are all cute fabrics but... 


I'm not sold on the row placement, and since it's not a traditional round robin, I can wait to see how I want the whole piece to come together. 

I would like it to stay relatively small so I can hang it in the studio which is small too. 

It's getting so big though!

after auditioning a lot of border possibilities, and knowing I'd like it to go on the mantel easel (so it must be small enough and done on peltex) I trimmed it down, plan a wide binding of that purple/blue/fuchia fabric and started quilting it. Just around the painted flowers so far, not to take away from the image. 

the leaf is pieced, quilted and cut to shape. I'll do some edge stitching maybe with buttonhole and beads! then it will extend out from the binding. It's always a challenge to combine quilting and painting.

paint party Friday

 

welcome to paint party Friday. 

I went to youtube to learn about meditative sketches. The first video I watched was on drawing mandalas...

I started drawing, badly to my eyes, right in the center of the sketchbook paper. Not liking it much, I moved to another set of videos by... Cher 

I watched how she approached straight and curved lines. So I took an orange pen and drew and drew and drew over the page. I turned off the videos and

 Then the fun started with watercolors in some segments 

which ones to color, and which colors? paint or pen? After I painted, I took a bold black pen to go over some intersections, including putting in some dots. White and black. How thick did I want the lines? where did I want them. I approached it with my heart... and liked each addition! Whee!

I liked drawing a white strip along an edge and blurring it with my fingers... I think it made the colors lift and sing. 

I left the orange marker to blur a bit, and even enjoyed the mandala after I painted it. 

When I was done, I propped up the pad, and looked at the whole thing. I'd spent about 20 minutes looking at it very closely in detail. I said, oh! A face!

Hey... I have kind of a round/square face! 

when dh came out of the office, he said, wow! When I turned it over he said he saw a horse, then another creature, then... nothing but colors. He is an engineer, a scientist at heart so his willingness to look for something in this was fun for me.

How much does intent matter when you're making art? Sometimes I know what I want to happen but many times I like making it from my heart, then looking for meaning in it... how about you?

FINE DINING

 these were  easy and good at breakfast as they are amazingly not overly sweet. Even Milo who won't get near fruit liked them!

 Michele mentioned her recipe for quick biscuits last Thursday, so I made some. I watched 3 videos on making two ingredient biscuits and melded them together to make mine.

the cut off dough edges were rolled into wee crescent rolls!

1 cup Self rising flour (I added salt and BP to my regular flour) to one cup heavy cream. Mix, pour onto floured silicon sheet, press out into about a 3/4 inch thick rectangle, cut into 9 squares, place on baking sheet. 

Here is where I veered off, I brushed the tops with butter and cream from the measuring cups, started them at 425, then turned down to 375 after 5 min, for 15 more. Til they are golden. 

Light, fluffy and perfect for sausage biscuit breakfast

Milo's Moment

Do I smell lunch?

Milo: heyyyy, nobody took my order!! I want a turkey sandwich, in a bowl, with sweet potato fries!

Mama: sorry honey, did you eat your kibble yet? 

Milo: eck! I'll just have what you're having, turkey what I smells, don't worry about stacking it up just toss it in a bowl. If you put it on a plate, cut into bite size pieces pweeze!

Mama: I gave you some sweet potato!

Milo: On DA FLOOR.... like a dog eats... the presentation here is bad!

Mama: ahem, I see the potatoes are gone...

Milo: from the goodness of my heart I ate them so you don't feel sadness Mama

Mama: ohhhhh.... for me.... such a good boy!

Milo: yep! tha's me, "good boy"! Let's talk about that turkey sandwich now... then I'll continue my nap

Sewing Sunday bonus edition... stay at home round robin

 

the row to be added this week was flying geese. 

I've done two round robins and can't say they were that much fun but this one gives us the leeway to work on our own designs. I started with the Lori Holt sewing machine pattern, my stash of cute sewing fabrics, and did the piano key border (bottom), the plus signs (top) a pin cushion block, and now my geese in cute fabrics!

I knew I was going to use cutie fabrics for geese but what around them?? I found this white with black dot, just right, in my stash...

who needs a pin cushion when there are scraps right here?

I stick a pin thru the joining corners of each unit, to the hilt, on both ends. Then put tiny clips along the sides to keep it in line to sew!

this is one setting, before I stitched the bottom geese together

I decided to wait to sew it down til I see the next row...
