Brown dishes, bowls, latte cup, and mug

pattern source  SewPrecise
Finishing up the color challenge of using brown scraps this month at superscrappy
I made a latte cup (above), some cool dishes, a tea mug, and a set of bowls to go with last week's teapot and cup.
Brown is not shiny and sparkly, and it's a bit hard for me to use. I do have some rich browns though and it took some digging through the scrap bin to find just the right ones for my dishes.
The latte cup is so pretty and graceful in person that I truly wish I had one for my morning coffee.
Now look at these five little dishes...

The top one is a dish of chocolates, heh heh. Then to match the little cup from before, some inspiring words, some brown with pink dots, a vine for growth, and spirals for the magic in life.

Wish I had these too.

oooo these bowl fabrics, yum! I like that I repeated some fabrics like the rims and saucer are the same. Makes the set go together.

Maartje designed this pattern and it's my favorite of hers. Free on her site, follow the link under the pic.
She also designed the next teacup with teabag...

note the tea is called "Choc-la-Tea"

So here are this month's dishes in browns.

It still isn't my favorite color but it's earthy and calm, organic, and can be rich.

I have absolutely no idea how to set these. There are different ones each month, so many colors. I could put all cups together, all pots together etc. I could keep color families together.

I could totally mix them all up!
I have a plan for a border though, interesting because I struggle with borders. This time I know what I want to do.
These have been lots of fun, but next year I think I might do something easier, know what I mean?

  2. This is going to be a fabulous quilt. I've made at least 3 brown quilts and love them all. It's certainly a color i wouldn't just throw in any quilt though. I love quilts with dishes too so this is right up my alley!

  4. Brown is really a great colour. I wouldn't have thought so, but when you present it like this, I'm able to see the beauty in it. Love your blocks.

  12. they sure are looking all cute together! you don't know how you're going to put these together? I guess I haven't been following too closely... you could do a hutch or "bookcase" for your ktchen. do you have room on your wall? that would look pretty cute, in rainbow colors. throw in a few cookbooks, and you're good to go!

  13. Your latte cup is sophisticated enough for the tea table at Downton Abbey! I see Maggie Smith with a hooked little finger sipping genteelly! Good luck assembling your quilt; I'm sure you'll come up with a fun arrangement.

  16. I always enjoy seeing your dishes. There have been a lot of them that I wish I had real-life versions of! (Like those brown bowls, for instance...)

  17. All your cups and pots and dishes have been so cute this year! Mixing them up into one quilt will be a wild and riotous and glorious quilt! Or maybe mix them into four groups of three colors each to use them as seasonal table toppers or runners? Whatever you do with them is going to be eagerly awaited by us all,

  18. A collection that does you proud. You have really mastered brown, and the repeats do tie them together. Having lived in Latte Land, Seattle, I can say that the mug is the perfect one to warm your hands on. Can see the steam rising from it right now.

  20. A cutesy set of blocks which is often seen IMHO 'overdone' with cutesy fabrics. But the browns and rich patterns really bring class to the set. I L-O-V-E it.

  24. All of your brown dishes turned out beautifully but I have to say the bowls are my favorites. I agree with you about using browns - useful but not inspiring. I don't envy you the challenge of deciding how to "load your cupboard," by type of dish or color or higglety-pigglety. I do look forward to seeing your solution though!

  25. Ooh, I really like browns and I love your brown dishes, cups and bowls. Look forward to seeing how you 'organise' them.

  26. I do know what you mean about choosing something easier. It is nice though to be able to go from complicated projects when you have the energy to something mindless when you are on empty. So many pretty shades of brown in your dishes. They look beautiful grouped together by color.

  27. I love your dishes and look forward to see what you're going to do with them! Are they all paper-pieced? Do you draw up your own patterns or use someone else's? They are just so fun!

  35. I really like these. I'm not a averse to brown as many people are. I think it's a great neutral with bright colors--not as stark a contrast as black, and there really are a lot of rich prints, as you've just shown. This collection of dishes is so fun. I'm looking forward to seeing how you lay it all out--and what the border will look like.

  36. I love this. I actually use Brown Drip Hull pottery for my everyday dishes--these blocks make me feel right at home. :)
