Fall Tumblers sewn on vacation

I'm trying something new to me... glue basting to paper pieces. 

I have done hexies in all ways and sizes, and I love the portability of EPP. I haven't done tumbler shapes yet, so I got a package at JoAnn's along with a Fons and Porter Glue pen, got out my scrap bins, and prepared a lot of them for the long car ride. I started with just oranges but had to add in blue and green...
 I chose fall colors to make a little table runner, because hope springs eternal that I will clean off the dining room table top eventually. I stitched them together... edge to edge no off set needed...

Then started stitching the long rows together... easy peasy. The only thing is, I don't like the glue much. It's stiff and it's harder to catch the edge in a whip stitch because it's paper thin, ahem, and stiff. I prefer plastic templates, and stitching behind the template to baste.
So, I tried this method... it is FAST and easy if you don't mind a bit of glue stick on your nails.
 I like the tumbler shape a lot!
 I like playing with Fall colors as the weather is about to change.
 I like using my scraps.
I had to add in more tumblers as it turned out smaller than I thought it might, so I'm not done but it's pretty fast to make.
 I think it will be pretty with hand quilting, and maybe a contrasting binding. I doubt I'll border it. I like the way the shapes float with color.

    Aren't you ambitious to be doing a project on your vacation! It is very pretty and I like the spots of blue, as it you're looking up at the trees and seeing bits of the sky.

    I've only recently become obsessed with EPP. I tried glue basting, and I didn't like it at all! Love the little tumblers!

    Looking lovely Leeanna! Very ambitious to do them by hand, but they turned out great. Do you glue them to the template?

      I run a bit of glue along the fabric, then fold it onto the slick paper template. It pulls off with little effort and the glue is water soluble.

    Interesting idea. Glad you tried it and reported back. You could probably use Elmers blue as well. I just sew a basting thread in the corners on the back of the hexies and then the template pulls out easily and no need to remove the basting as it's not showing on the front.
    I like the tumblers used this way.

      right, that's exactly how I've always done hexies... that's why I tried a different method and reported back to y'all. I like the back basting better now that I've done both. LeeAnna

    Glue has its basting merits, but as you discovered it does have a downside. the addition of blue and green fabrics brings the project to life.

    I just bought some glue to try it out. I'll let you know what I think, providing of course that I don't end up glued to my project and unable to type. (It has happened before...)
    I like the little bits of blue and green peeking through, as well! Like looking up at the sky through the leaves. It reminds me of Vermont.

    I am not a fan of glue either. I would think for me the only way to do tumblers is sitting behind my machine and chain piecing them! As I age I realize I need to save my hands for the hand quilting where it shows. I love your colors so vibrant!

    Aren't you brave to use needles and scissors in a moving car! I stab myself enough just sitting still. The runner in process looks quite lovely. Hand quilting on it would be a very nice touch.

    These are really pretty. EPP is great in the car however, I have never done tumblers. Might have to add them to my EPP list! I sew through the papers, I find it easier than the glue or sewing behind the template.

    I started a project using glue to turn under applique using freezer paper but I havent' tried to pull off the paper yet. something tells me it might not pull off. have you ever tried glue with freezer paper? the glue is supossed to be water soluable so I suppose I could soak it but that sounds like alot of work. I needed a portable thing to take camping with no electricity. your idea of hexies or tumblers sounds better :-)

    Beautiful colors! I keep hearing about people loving the glue pens but after reading this I think I may stick to basting. Tumblers are next on my list.
