Remember the STAT quilt I am working on?? ( click here)
I took some thick embroidery threads, mostly hand dyes from ArtFabric as well as some neon rayon threads and a self threading needle and started to play. Really just let my whims take me on what to stitch
It was so Freeing!
The silks are sumptuous and well silky. I liked the neon green on the green fabric, the thick variegated on the french knots on the turquoise. The color changed in just the right spacing to do french knots so that each bobble looks a different color!!! Surprise!
I stenciled the scissors on with Stewart Gill metallic green which looks gold...
Lois Jones, the painter we are studying and interpreting in fabric, seemed to print symbols over her paintings, so I did that with scissors, and the little star emblems were stenciled across the top of the piece.
It looks a bit messy at the moment from handling.
The silks are more delicate than cottons would be, so I had better stop here, put it on the peltex and machine quilt it now.
This is ANOTHER design decision... how to machine quilt it, and how to finish the edge. Well, one step at a time, first the quilting. As for the binding, like Scarlett O'Hara says, I'll think about that tomorrow.
What I've learned?? I want to do this again, in a larger context so that I can really work the stitches. I might have to use heavy silks in that one, so that I can really adhere them to the stabilizer. I want to do more with this slow technique. It is soothing, and thrilling to see color and line adding up.
OOoooooohhhhhh fabulous! You are so creative!
ReplyDeleteJust sumptuous! This looks lovely--the colors just sing...hugs, Julierose
ReplyDeleteThis is the kind of sewing that really gives you a chance to study what you are doing and add lots of detail that you might otherwise hurry through. You are making this a very rich piece and I really hope you do more in this way! Lovely!
ReplyDeleteI think handstitching really lets you connect with what you are working on. This is looking very cool.
ReplyDeletePretty! I love that aqua fabric, especially against the pink. A bigger piece would be excellent. Working with silk is bound to be soothing because they're so, well, silky, and feel fabulous. Lovely work!
ReplyDeleteHi LeeAnna!
ReplyDeleteAlways great to see the new combinations you're trying! And enjoying!
Take care,
Joanne
Fun is right! Hand stitching is so soothing. One of my favorite parts of a quilt is the hand doing of the binding or facing. What is under all the little pieces - a base fabric! Stabilizer? Are you putting it on peltex and then quilting it? Looking forward to seeing this completed
ReplyDeletelooking forward to seeing more! I have that exact Stewart Gill paint... love me some green!
ReplyDeleteThis is really adventurous and beautiful LeeAnna!
ReplyDeleteThis looks like such a fun project. You really know how to enjoy yourself with your
ReplyDeletework.
Hmmm... soothing and thrilling... how can we resist that?!?! Love it!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun, indeed!! Can't wait to see the whole thing. Enjoy the journey!
ReplyDeleteSo pretty!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun stitching! Especially love the stenciled scissors.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job. I must have been so busy this weekend I haven't read anything from anybody. Happy Birthday! Girl, I can't believe you cross the lines! LOL I do it all the time!
ReplyDeleteIt is true though, my stuff was always passed over at guild challenges for more "traditional" looking quilts. You should have seen them glaze over when we presented the "modern" quilts at one of the meetings.
Love the colours and the stitching really adds an extra something to it - would definitley be great as a big project on a bag or a cushion - I'd love that in silks!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun and creative project! I love how colorful it is!
ReplyDeleteI've recently started a weekly Stitchery Link Party for all things hand embroidered and I'd love to have you come link up this post. http://www.supermomnocape.com/2015/05/18/vintage-embroidery-monday-stitchery-link-party-6/ I do hope you'll come join in.
It looks like you had a lot of fun creating this piece and the silks are beautiful! :) x
ReplyDeleteYour use of paint as well as appliqué and embroidery is fun. It isn't as dense as I would expect. Is it a special fabric paint?
ReplyDeleteI love all of the colors! Lovely.
ReplyDeleteI'm just popping back to thank you for linking up to last Monday's Stitchery Link Party. I do hope you'll join in again soon. Hugs!
