I've been intrigued with faces for years, so I try to interpret them in lots of ways. I saw a female face online this week,
and just loved her... my paints, simple waterbrush, and flip notebook were by the computer so I painted a version. I wanted to not draw hard lines first, no sketch, and to provide all features with shadows only
I liked her, her lace dress, her features but something was off. Just like in real life, hair color makes a difference. I went back and added darker brown paint, which suits her skin tone...
Imagine how pretty it would be on watercolor paper, with a real brush... but I am smitten with her. I wanted her to be delicate, her skin to be pale, her eyes stunning. I am amazed that a bit of brown, and pink made that lace dress along with some white pen marks
I've read that a face is defined not by eyes, but by a nose. I tried to create her nose with dabs of paint, but really love how her mouth looks. She is impressionistic, more than realistic and I want to follow this on some more paintings
Thank you for indulging me... don't you find some art pieces take on a life of their own, that they made themselves almost, that they are like a baby... you made it but there is an unmistakable sense that they are their own entity? I can admire them that way and I find myself looking at this painting a lot.
I've also stared a lot at this calendar page this week, being physically unable to do much, and love so much about it. Layers of pattern, the dynamic attitude, the wings and words, the halo...
I took the free Zen Stitch workshop this week, best I could. I couldn't make all I wanted but I tried my hand at chicken scratch embroidery... it's done on gingham fabric, stars joined with woven loops. I like the look of the random stars...
I also tried a macrame leaf, and wanted to make so much more. I hope I remember enough when I stop hurting so much, to try later.
I found these basted hexies in my stash, done years ago. I started sewing them together while sitting quietly and watching old TV shows this week. ("Our Miss Brooks" and "Make room for Daddy" )
I plan to supplement with some solids in aqua, red, pink and orange...
other leftover hexies became a wee mug rug for my friend Pat in NY...
Hand stitched, hand embroidered but machine quilted to felt. One of the workshops this week talked about a vine done with outline stitch, and lazy daisy petals, some french knots to give an idea of flowers
It came out so lovely to me. Pat loves gardening and has been a good friend, I hope she'll like it
I am counting it as my Table Scraps challenge, not the one I planned to make, but life requires being flexible right?
finishing with this video on print making...
gotta try this

The embroidery on the little mug rug is beautiful. I had scrolled through to look at the faces you painted, before going back and reading what you wrote. The first thing I noticed was the way you did the lips - such beautiful shape and shading. Great job!
ReplyDeleteOoh, cool. I really like the embroidery on the hexies.
ReplyDeleteI like the little mug rug you made! The embroidery is a fun addition, too. I haven't thought to sew those to a felt backing like that, but what a good idea!
ReplyDeleteGreat job with the faces. She is lovely! Found Hexies! Awesome. The embroidery is just right!
ReplyDeleteI 🩷 the embroidered hexie mug rug!!!
ReplyDeleteYour lady is stunning! I thought the bowl coasters were amazing on the Zen workshops. . .I too hope I can remember what I saw so I can stich projects later!
ReplyDeleteI love the hexie mug matt! So pretty!
ReplyDeleteLovely painted lady, I love the shadows on her face, and her neck, bravo for this beautiful painting! Cute and colorful hexies, and fun way to assemble them into a mug rug! Love the vine too. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteYour painted lady is beautiful. Love that mug rug too!
ReplyDeleteYour painting is beautiful. I have always wanted to try my hand at that art, but unfortunately I strive for perfection and am not happy with the slow progression of the talent. I am sorry that your back recovery is taking so long. I have dealt with back issues since I was young, so I understand your pain. It never interfered with my crafting though and I usually had to suck it up and keep going for my kids. I have a high tolerance for pain. I hope you start feeling better soon. I love those hexies. At least you can work on those and possibly finish a UFO.
ReplyDeleteWow, the eyes are aquite stunning! Well done.
ReplyDeleteSome projects truly do speak to you. We are wise when we listen. Thanks for sharing in my Sew and Tell.
ReplyDeleteThat embroidered hexie mug rug is the sweetest thing! Love the colors and fabrics you are using in the other hexie project too. These seem like just the perfect thing for you to do as you wait to feel better, which I hope and pray is soon. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

Ooh, I can't wait to get the hexie mug rug. I fell behind on blog reading when I went to Clayton, NY, on the St. Lawrence River last weekend, and I'm just getting caught up. We went to a quilt show that a few quilting friends have been attending for over 10 years (it's held every other year), but it's been 5 years since the last one because of COVID. It was a really good show with lots of inspiring ideas and we spent a few days relaxing by the river. I hope you get some relief soon from the back pain.
