I Like Thursday # 321 poodles and pumpkins and costumes oh my

check out that fly on my pumpkin...
welcome to this week's list of likes!

I'm taking a workshop with Kate Ward this week, keeping me busy so a short one today. I had a lot of migraines this week, slowing me down a lot. We had a cold snap, yea! Love cooler weather! Leaves were nearly blown off the street, down the road to Kansas this weekend!

flowers are about done and those two peppers I nudged along for 4 months needed to be harvested.

We sliced one of them into really thin strips for turkey sandwiches at lunch one day, instead of lettuce. Actually tasted wonderful, and will try that again. This little fellow was too small but I couldn't bear leaving him out in the frost!

love using my Halloween dishes

Milo keeps a close eye on these but they are too far back on the counter out of poodle reach. Speaking of poodles...

we got a new rug for the back patio door area and a certain poodle likes to sunbathe there while watching the bunny channel. I like the pattern enough to get rugs for front and stairs.

My book series about nantucket mentioned this wine in all the books, so we tried it and it's great!

decided to make sweet and sour orange sauce to put on chicken and vege dinner... it's so good

and thought I should mention I like arrowroot instead of cornstarch (I'm allergic to corn) and it works great with good flavor. Thank you to a previous I Like post by Mary in Peoria who uses aminos instead of soy sauce (I'm allergic to soy too) so now I can use my recipes that call for soy sauce!
also in the sauce is fresh ginger, garlic, chili flakes, brown sugar, cider vinegar along with OJ

I often want to add a bit of broth to cooking but our containers were too big. DH found these cute 1 cup sized containers. I'll cook the peppers, onions, mushrooms, carrots and celery in it then add the oven fried chicken tenders and orange sauce. Something different.

Our prompt this week is to talk about halloween costumes we've worn and liked as kids or adults:

I remember as a little girl, wanting the (cheap) dimestore costumes with plastic masks...

I had a costume every year of something, hobo, pumpkin, I know one year I was told I'd be a clown and I hated that costume. I do not like a clown anyway. I know I was a gypsy many times with the fun jewelry and scarves. I remember a Dale Evans cowgirl costume I wore a lot after Halloween.

One year I went to mardi gras in new orleans, and saw some awesome costumes. The one I remember best was an entire family of cows... from baby to grandpa same costumes!

I dressed up a lot as a performer and dancer, in costume and loved all of them

in Maryland, DH and I used to dress up as Morticia and Gomez, sit at a little table in the front yard, drink wine out of these classes and hand out candy.

we used to go to a craft festival that had a dog costume contest and I remember Hairy Poodle from Dogwarts as a favorite. I dressed my black lab up as an angel one year and she hated it.                          I thought it would be fun for dh and I to dress like poodles, and sit outside with Cole but turned out he disliked masks and kids running amuk in the dark anyway.

in high school I wanted to look like a grand lady from 1850 and we had a seamstress make me a gown. I loved that realistic dress, with crinolines.

I used to work the Renaissance Festival and had some mighty fine outfits, so I sometimes wore those to a costume party. A corset is a might fine thing! can't find the pics of me, but like a colorful this:

Milo's Moment

Milo: don't. Don't even think about putting some weirdo costume on me!!! I don't even like the leash!!!

Mama: but wouldn't you be cute in a daisy costume? or a poodle skirt? that would be adorable!

Milo: y'all see what I have to put up with? Good thing I love her... amiright?

  1. I loved the dress idea with gomez nd laeticia... I had only an idiot-date who came as ALF and passed out in the thick fur costume while I waited at ER in my nun costume LOL

  2. My pups don't like costumes (or hats or any other garment-like things) either so alas, I'm limited to people only costumes. I'm so sorry it's been a bad week for migraines, but I hope you enjoy the workshop! And the sweet and sour orange sauce sounds great! I have a recipe for orange chicken that I haven't made in years, I should dig it out!!

  3. I would have loved seeing you dressed as Morticia and Gomez to greet the trick or treaters. What fun! The small town we used to live in had a big adult costume party/dance every year as a fund raiser for the summer youth programs. We had such fun every year coming up with fun costumes. My favorite was the year we recruited a couple more people and I made Fruit of the Loom costumes for us all. I was 8 months pregnant and those big stuffed grapes hid my belly.

The sauce you made sounds delish! I just bought some infused honey that I want to find a good recipe to use.

  4. Hooray for little home-grown peppers to eat! Glad you can find specialized products for cooking that work well for you, too. How fun to find a wine brand in a book and actually be able to purchase it. I bet you guys had fun being Morticia and Gomez on Halloween!

  7. Love all the fall colors and love your cookie dish. Very pretty.

I always enjoy seeing Milo. He's so handsome.

Have a fabulous Thankful Thursday. Scritches to Milo. ♥

  8. Milo is very handsome. When I was young we had a beautiful poodle, Gigi and later her daughter Renee. They were such sweethearts. Our middle dresses their pups for Halloween except Loki, if you put a costume on him he stands likes he is frozen so she thinks of him as her son so he does not have to participate. We like handed out candy to the little ones. Thanks for the stories and photos too. Have a great weekend. They come up quickly.

  9. Those are all excellent thankfuls and I like that candy corn dish too. Milo, we think you'd look really fabulous as a daisy! Thanks for joining our Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!

  10. Thank you for linking up with us for Thankful Thursday! I love your Halloween dishes...that candy corn plate is so cute. I would love eating off of them too! I know which book series you're reading...I love that series by Pamela Kelley! I recently tried that wine as well and I liked it too. Do you like to vote on election day or do you early vote? We're a family divided. Some of us like to vote early, but I prefer to vote on election day. I'm so traditional about it all! It's an important right- exercising our right to vote. I hope you had a great week!

  11. Loved seeing all your costumes! I cannot remember a single childhood Halloween costume! I think that is odd!
It’s good to know that there are substitutes for cornstarch or soy! Food allergies are a bummer. We have family who are gluten intolerant. So use cornstarch instead of flour and make sure soy sauce is gluten free! Not all are!
    I need to research Arrowroot!
Ps: thanks for the reminder to vote for the rights of women! So so important!

  12. You got peppers! Mine all shriveled up. I like your candy-corn dish. The bunny channel sounds like good stuff (lately we can't seem to tune it in). Your orange sauce looks tasty. Oh - what fun to dress up as Morticia and Gomez! That's excellent. Part of my wench costume came from the MN Renaissance faire. I discovered the hard way NOT to wear the corset when contra dancing - I nearly fainted!

  13. What a great post - I really enjoy reading your thoughts and seeing all your projects. And, especially, thank you for the PSA. Our votes are so important right now.

  14. Sorry to hear about your migraines. Hope you enjoy your workshop. I'm with Milo on him not liking being dressed up.

  15. Nice to see Milo soaking up some sunshine! I love a good glass of wine and have had that brand before. It's a good one! Thanks for linking up and have a great weekend.

  16. I'll buy the quart broth, pour into 1/2c or 1c containers, freeze and then pop them all in a ziploc. (food for thought).

I feel ya on the peppers. I had no mature harvest this year. I gleaned everything bigger than my thumb and we'll use them even though they are thin-walled.

Happy Friday to you and I hope your Migraine is gone or at least tolerable.

  17. Congrats on your pepper harvest!
Love all your costumes. I made a Civil War era dress for myself, crinoline and all, for a history project in eighth grade. Stood in front of the class and gave my presentation wearing it, then wore it for Halloween as well. My son inherited my love of costumes and enjoys Ren. Fairs. Now his son does too; he'll be going as Robin Hood for Halloween this year.

  18. I do remember those horrid costumes with the plastic mask that we all wanted to wear. You sure have had a variety of costumes. I hope the change in temp means the migraines have calmed down. Milo looks great on his new rug, a few more would be perfect for him. I have used amino acids rather than soy to keep the sodium low...no one notices! I like the idea of the 1 c broth, as I always think I will use the rest, then I don't. I had a bouillon cube I liked (rapunzel) but it disappeared.

  19. What a wonderful post today! I enjoyed reading about all the costumes you wore in the past. As you know, our pups don't mind dressing up, as long as they're paid well!
Thanks for joining Nature Friday today!

  20. Your old Halloween costume is exactly what I remember too! Those plastic masks were so hard to breathe through! They always got so wet and sweaty. I used to get migraines all the time but I haven't for awhile. I'm grateful.

  21. Absolutely love that new rug by the door! The muted colors are so gorgeous! One nice thing about the breezy days is they help move fallen leaves down the road (well except for the ginormous Catalpa leaves which fall and stick like Velcro to wherever they land. Grr).

  22. A fun post, LeeAnna, except for the migraines. Sorry about that, I get them, too, all my life and they are awful. Milo is so cute lying in the sunshine on your new, pretty rug. I like the idea of using the arrowroot instead of cornstarch - I will try that. The sweet/sour chicken recipe sounds wonderful.
Your Halloween costume memories are fun. I remember going as an elf one year, as a kid. I had this pointy, green furry hat and dressed in green tights and oversized green sweatshirt. We used to get pillowcases full of candy. My goodness - can you imagine? My grandson was born on Halloween. A special little soul. xx K

  23. Your posts are always so interesting to read; I thoroughly enjoy them. I didn't get a post in last week, sorry - I've always thought dressing in period clothing would be fun. Not sure I could handle a corset, but I probably need one - hahahaha!

  24. My favorite costume is one I made for my son when he was 4 years old. It was a huge piece of pizza that he could just tie around his neck and waist. I went from his neck to his ankles that year. He wore it every single year after. When he was a senior in high school, it went from his neck to his waist. I got a picture of him taking his two little ones trick-or-treating... He went as that same pizza!
