then I fussy cut some 7" squares, and figured out how to nip the corners off using my 3" ruler's 45 deg markings... where they converged was the perfect place to cut, meaning I didn't even need my own drawn template! Drawing it just allowed me to discover how to cut with the ruler.
I didn't want to waste a 42 piece layer cake for the 25 squares needed for this quilt, so I picked 25 prints for the octagons... Whee! I obviously centered the part of the print I wanted to see...
you'll need 1.5" strips in colors and whites... and since I wasn't using layer cake cut offs, I just went thru all my small scraps to find ones to use on the sort of pineapple blocks from the pattern
and got ready to sew sew sew!
I was going to show you the small improv piece started last week but blogger has really messed up images so I just hope all my work to cut paste and center works for this post.
Fabric is always is eye catching. I love your colored piece and the octagons too. I have a big stash and must do something with it, but the fabric is something that caught my eye and I had to have to. Smile. Thanks for your weather and water comments. It is a really tough situation. And with global warming who knows how much wetter or dryer things will get. You're int he dry zone, us in the wet. Have a great weekend. Hugs-Erika

The martini sweater made me laugh out loud! How stinking cute!!! Love those octagons in all those different holiday fabrics. Missouri Star does have some awesome designs. I enjoy watching Jenny's videos each week. And I don't usually buy the special rulers either because usually there is a way to use a ruler I already have.
ReplyDeletePeppermint Martini sweater? SEW cute, LeeAnna!! It looks like you are going to have lots of fun with that scrappy Christmas quilt, as well.
ReplyDeleteLove your octagons and the bright happy blocks at the top. How cheerful!
ReplyDeleteOh, how clever you are to come up with your own unique octagons! You must have a deep Christmas stash. The sweaters are adorable (as usual). you’ve got some fun project going on!
ReplyDeleteI love the tilt-y squares and the octagons! Fun when we figure out how to cut things once we make a template. I did that the other day with a flying geese unit. I just wanted to be sure I was trimming it right as I had no extra fabric to speak of!
ReplyDeleteThe wonky squares are so fun, and I like your other projects too. I've heard a few Blooger peeps saying the images thing is messed up - what a headache!
ReplyDeleteThose sweaters are awesome! The martini one is just so fun. Looking forward to how the octagons turn out. Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteYour fussy cut octagons look delightful. Good for you figuring out how to cut them out.
ReplyDeletePat
Totally love that martini sweater! Too cute. 🍸
ReplyDeleteI had fun just looking at your Christmas octagon pieces. Penguins, cowboy boots, poinsettias and flamingo, oh my! Such fun!
ReplyDeleteLoving your big octagons, very Christmas-y! Your wonky blocks in the 1st pic are very eye catching, look forward to seeing how the variegated threads work out.
ReplyDeleteOh those brights are so happy!! that is just going to make an awesome quilt!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing the tutorial. Can't wait to get started on that pattern.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful bright solid quilt, and thanks for the tutorial, very inspiring! Sorry I'm way behind visiting your blog.
ReplyDeleteIt's fun to use those lines on your rulers, isn't it? Looks like you did an awesome job! Can't wait to see those connecting blocks. Thanks for sharing that and your RSC sweaters and tilted blocks on Wednesday Wait Loss. You are always inspiring!
