sewing saturday Back to color!!!


 For this week's sewing round up I'll start with the blocks I made using this tutorial Here

I made some more with bright solids, from my stash of solids I seldom use. I kind of like them but don't like how regular they are. I hope I will enjoy quilting them with variegated threads. I might add some applique too. 
I also made some last sweaters for RSC in dark neutrals. 
I watched this tutorial and decided the middle quilt looked like lots of fun, with big octagons.

I didn't want to order, pay shipping and wait for the template so I googled how to draw your own octagon. I knew her square was 7 inches and went from there. Easy!

then I fussy cut some 7" squares, and figured out how to nip the corners off using my 3" ruler's 45 deg markings... where they converged was the perfect place to cut, meaning I didn't even need my own drawn template! Drawing it just allowed me to discover how to cut with the ruler.

I didn't want to waste a 42 piece layer cake for the 25 squares needed for this quilt, so I picked 25 prints for the octagons... Whee! I obviously centered the part of the print I wanted to see...

you'll need 1.5" strips in colors and whites... and since I wasn't using layer cake cut offs, I just went thru all my small scraps to find ones to use on the sort of pineapple blocks from the pattern

and got ready to sew sew sew! 

I was going to show you the small improv piece started last week but blogger has really messed up  images so I just hope all my work to cut paste and center works for this post.

    Fabric is always is eye catching. I love your colored piece and the octagons too. I have a big stash and must do something with it, but the fabric is something that caught my eye and I had to have to. Smile. Thanks for your weather and water comments. It is a really tough situation. And with global warming who knows how much wetter or dryer things will get. You're int he dry zone, us in the wet. Have a great weekend. Hugs-Erika

    The martini sweater made me laugh out loud! How stinking cute!!! Love those octagons in all those different holiday fabrics. Missouri Star does have some awesome designs. I enjoy watching Jenny's videos each week. And I don't usually buy the special rulers either because usually there is a way to use a ruler I already have.

    I love the tilt-y squares and the octagons! Fun when we figure out how to cut things once we make a template. I did that the other day with a flying geese unit. I just wanted to be sure I was trimming it right as I had no extra fabric to speak of!
