Saturday's questions

have a seat, let's chat!

The saturday questions from (http://samanthasaturday9.blogspot.com/)

Saturday 9: Mad About You (1992)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) Mad About You was a sitcom that ran from 1992 to 1999. Are you familiar with the show? Were you a fan?
A: it's still one of my top 5 favorite all time comedy shows... it was so clever at the time!

Hank Azzarria as the dogwalker was a highlight! "come on, Murray tyler-Moore!" "Let's go Murray Antoinette!"

2) The show was rebooted in 2019/2020 on the Spectrum streaming service. Do you have any streaming services? If so, which ones?
A: one almost has to these days! We have Prime, ACORN for British shows, netflix, and I'm tempted with STARZ for outlander, and Disney for Hamilton but haven't invested

3) The series revolved around Manhattan newlyweds Paul and Jamie Buchman. They met at a newsstand, where they were both purchasing The New York Times. With so many publications online, newsstands are now uncommon. When you want to purchase a printed newspaper or magazine, where do you go?
A: we support the Denver Post by actual subscription but would go to a convenience mart if we weren't in a pandemic. Now everything is suspect...

4) Paul is played by Paul Reiser. He created the series because he believes marriage is a tough but satisfying adventure. He and real-life wife Paula have been married for more than 30 years. They met when she was a waitress at the comedy club where he was performing. Have you ever waited tables?
A: it's probably why I never ran off to Broadway to be an actresss/dancer... I could not remember who ordered what or carry all the heavy plates! I'd for sure trip on the way to refilling coffee!

5) Helen Hunt won four Emmy Awards as Jamie. Over 10 million people watch the Emmys each year. She also won an Oscar, which has an annual viewership of twice that. Therefore huge audiences witnessed Helen's acceptance speeches. Are you comfortable speaking in public?
A: I used to be VERY afraid but one counseling job included teaching classes in junior high... trial by fire, a real dog and pony show to keep the attention of 13 year olds! I got over the fears there, and went on to LOVE giving lectures to other artists, and teaching creativity work.

I have found, people want you to do well... so they will encourage you if you'll just notice.

6) During the opening credits, Paul and Jamie are sharing an ice cream bar. When did you most recently have ice cream?

A: ya caught me... we're back on the hard stuff. We had some two nights ago, coconut organic ice cream with our birthday chocolate cake. I love ice cream. I toured Ben and Jerry's place in VT and they gave my lab a whole scoop of her own to try! She'd never had her own scoop!

7) Paul and Jamie's best friends were another couple, Fran and Mark. Eventually Fran and Mark divorced, and Paul and Jamie worked at being friends with both of them. Have you been friends with a couple who split? Did you manage to stay friends with both of them?
A: I've been on the other side of that...where a couple has to choose my ex or me after a boyfriend breakup, but it's usually obvious who you'll continue with... for me it was the woman usually.

solidarity sistah!

8) In 1992, when Paul and Jamie were playing New Yorkers, real New Yorkers were following the trial of mobster John Gotti. Mr. Gotti acquired many nicknames, including The Teflon Don, The Dapper Don and Black John. Is there anyone in your life that you call by a pet name or nickname?

A: I've had so many nicknames... when dh and I met we called each other TS (for things like, Too sweet, too smart etc) and he still calls me "elle" or "L" to get my attention. People like to shorten my name, LeeAnna to Lee or Annie or inexplainably, Lou Ann

In high school our band did a long train trip to washington DC to march in the cherry blossom festival, and I kept stretching my legs out onto the seat across from me, so I got the name, "legs" for that trip which followed me for a year or so

9) Random question  -- What subject do you wish you knew more about?

A: I can't get enough archeology and history. I'd like to learn to speak Italian and to play the ukelele better.  Each morning I read the Writer's Almanac and there's always something in there to spur me down the research rabbit hole of google on writers or events. I want to learn more about good writing and finish my novel. I want to learn why dogs and elephants do what they do.  I always want to learn more about exhibits I see at museums, so I come home and research them. When we travel I like to learn how that area was developed.

  5. I loved that show. I’ve taught HS speech for over 30 years, so speaking in public isn’t an issue for me. And I spent 15 years doing staff development workshops for teachers. The only streaming media I use currently is Prime, but keep being tempted to do DisneyPlus just for Hamilton.

  9. Oh my goodness- Mad about You was one of my favorite shows. One favorite skit was when Jamie was all dressed to go out and her panty hose were driving her crazy and she just stopped and yanked them off. My daughter and I identified with her immediately.
