Scattered blue skies little blue pinwheels!

The color of the month at the RSC is blue. I started sewing my Sapphire Star, (post here) mystery blocks, all in blues, and instead of cutting off the wee triangles I sewed another seam and made tiny half square blocks.

I didn't mark, or take much care of size, they all came out about the same. After I cut them off, pressed them open, I played around with them and finally decided to do little pinwheels.Really, I didn't spend much energy trying to be exact and the blocks looked ragged but I knew they met in the center. A quick trim took care of the uneven edges, and I got to have fun instead of worrying.

Four of the little HST blocks make one pinwheel block, that I trimmed to 2"

Crazy?
ha ha!
So I didn't fuss the sewing, instead just placed them together with the angles meeting and sewed about an 8th inch seam, making sure they met in the centers. Then I trimmed all four sides down to the 2" block.

Now what... hmmm.... well I could do a border of them. What in the center???
I have a drawer of misfits, so I peered inside to find the little stamp Deb Gabel gave me once. She and I were in an art quilt group together for a few years and she was throwing this away. Well, you know me!
"could I have it?"   Laughing, she said, sure.

It's almost the right size. I'll have to trim the sides, and add a bit to the top and bottom and it will be cute!

I grew up in Tampa, and love flamingos, and love to use scraps! This should finish about 9" X 12" and hang in a little space that needs some color!
cute right?

No piece left behind...

  13. Fantastic, LeeAnna. I'm drawn to all the simple HST-based blocks at the moment so your pinwheels fit the bill nicely, and flamingos too - perfect!

  18. I think this little piece is wonderful - and I did a whole quilt border once with those twice-sewn HST triangles. Wonky and erratic but oh, so colorful.
