Giveaway and Book Review
The winner is Claudia! I drew names, and only wish I had one for each of you. I will be checking out your fave authors for my next books, and stay tuned for more giveaways coming soon from me!!
Thank you to Frances Dowell for the opportunity to discover your storytelling. I was sent this book to preview and enjoyed it very much. My friend Mary who used to work for the Library of Congress, and after retirement worked as school librarian for her son's school, bought Ms Dowell's books for young adults, was happy to hear she was writing for adults.
I'm not a professional critic, just a happy reader who knows what she likes.
Here goes...
Review:
I woke up this morning missing the characters in Frances O'Roark Dowell's new novel Birds in the air.
I found this lighthearted book easy to read.
I love a "slice of life" book and I found myself immersed in this modern day story.
The characters are so real and developed I began to think of them as friends and actually miss them today! I want to know what they are doing now.
I relate to the main character Emma. A writer who discovers the love of quilting and longs to belong in her new town. I have been in a similar situation.
The dialogue and story line are real and engaging and quilters will love being reminded of their introduction to quilt making.
I want to know more. Frances, please stop what you're doing and go write.
Stop eating, sleeping, and watching tv, and go write another story for us to enjoy!
This is the author's response to my review...
" ... the book comes out September 24th. Have we talked about doing a give away? If you want to hold off until the 24th and offer a give-away, I’ll mail a book directly to the winner"
So there you have it, a chance to win a copy of this novel. Hot off the presses.
In order to win a copy simply leave a comment below. Entertain me... tell me about an author you enjoy so much you've read just about everything they've written.
I keep a sort of account of books I've read since starting the blog on my book review page here
I'll start... I've read all the books by: Maeve Binchy & Rosamund Pilcher and a few others
I've read most books by: Diana Gabaldon, Rhys Bowen, Sara Dunnant
I have read many books by Laura Child, Nora Roberts, Jude Deveraux (Oh! a Knight in shining armor... )
I am reading as fast as I can several other series and love to read.... how about you?
I'll choose a winner , probably a drawing to be fair, and the author, Frances Dowell will send you a new book to read. Closing date for entry will be Sept 26th.
Make sure to leave an email address
Good luck and thank you for reading my words each week.
There's too many favorite authors! I'll have to pick Michelle Sagara West. I've read/reading all of her series. It's fantasy. She's not the easiest to read - her logic jumps, it's not easy to grasp everything that she's thinking of and her dialog can be hard to follow. But I find the characters interesting and the situations can make me laugh. I'm interested in what becomes of her characters - that's when I know I have a good book. :-)
ReplyDeleteGreat review. Sounds like a wonderful new book. As to authors that I lean towards reading everything that they've written, or everything I can find that they've written the list would be quite long, but here are some: Nora Roberts, Danielle Steele, Fern Michaels, Susan Wiggs, Earlene Fowler, Jeffrey Archer, Ayn Rand, Stephen Woodworth, J.K. Rowling, James Patterson, Anne Tyler, John Grisham, Dean Koontz, Ann Rice, and Susan Mallery all come to mind. This summer I was introduced to the authors Jo Nesbo and Jussi Adler-Olsen and thoroughly enjoyed their writing styles and want to read more of their books.

I saw in one of your posts that you were reading Susan Wiggs, and I have enjoyed her books a lot! I had actually forgotten that I liked her until I read your post, and realized I need to go and find some more of hers. I also love Nora Roberts and Sandra Dallas when she writes about quilters!
ReplyDeleteOh I love Ellie Griffiths, Erin Hart--I've read all of their books along with my old favorite Agatha Christie, Elizabeth George and Ann Cleeves, Deborah Crombie, Leighann Dobbs, James D. Doss and so many others. I am and always have been an avid and constant reader.
ReplyDeletethanks for the chance to win...hugs, Julierose
Oooh, I love to read. Just finished a Mary Kay Andrews book. Will look for more of her works. I like to read a variety of books with knitting/sewing/quilting themes. Thanks.

I have been enjoying reading Debbie Macomber. I have even got my husband to watch all of the Cedar Cove series on Netflix.
ReplyDeleteI am a voracious reader so it's hard to choose a favorite author. But I do love Marie Bostwick.
ReplyDeleteYikes, there are a lot of authors whose next book I can hardly wait for. Highest on the list is Louise Penny (Inspector Gamache/Three Pines mysteries). But also Carolyn Hart, Deborah Crombie, Julia Spenser-Fleming, Susan Wittig Albert. I could go on and on.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I signed up for email delivery of your blog posts in time to get this in my inbox! I'm just about always on the hunt for new authors as I'm quite picky about my reading material. I enjoy romance novels but don't want anything hot and steamy. I seem to prefer historical novels at the moment (longing for "simpler times" perhaps?). I have nearly all of Georgette Heyer's Regency romances. I also have the whole collection of The Cat Who mysteries. Along that line I've recently discovered Eva Gates' library-in-a-lighthouse mystery series. My other favorite author of all time is Sir Terry Pratchett. I adore his fantasy novels that so eloquently comment on society in the "real world." I started a page on GoodReads to keep track of my books but haven't kept up with it. I'd rather stitch or read than document what I've read. ;- )
ReplyDeleteThree authors come to mind right off the bat for me...Stephen King, Ann Rule and Dean Koontz. I haven't read any of their books in years though, I used to pick up which ever book of theirs when it came out and read it, leaving me hungry for another ASAP> Now, I read the "slice Of "life" books, that catch my interest when I read their reviews. The last three authors I read are Soloman Northrup, Laila Ibrahim, and Donna Foley Mabry. Thanks for a chance to read another good book!
ReplyDeleteI just finished several historical fiction books, The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom and The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I don't do a lot of reading but these two I couldn't put down once I opened them. Be warned if you read them as that just might happen to you too.
ReplyDeletethat sounds super good... if we can't wait to read more, then the writer did a fabulous job :o) that's what makes books to real friends somehow :o)
ReplyDeleteHow cool that the author offered a book to one of your readers! I don't really have a favorite author, but enjoy browsing the fiction section at my local library for new releases. It's not unusual to come home with 3 or 4 books to read!
ReplyDeleteMary Lawson is an author I've really enjoyed. She was recommended to me by a Canadian quilter at a workshop I attended (Mary is a Canadian author.)
ReplyDeleteI love a good book where the characters stay with me for a long time! Maeve Binchy is one of my favorites! Thanks to you and to Frances Dowell for the chance to win her new book.

Oooh, you had me at give-away! Seriously though, nothing like a fun, smart read. I read a similar storyline about a sewer a number of years ago but have completely forgotten the author's name (damn short term memory!). Thanks for the opportunity to experience Ms. Dowell and thanks to you for sharing. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteOne author maybe James Michner of old. I loved Alaska.
ReplyDeleteI've been hearing a lot about France's' book. I listen to her podcast , the off kilter quilt and am in a Facebook group called twitters and the very generous lovely ladies there made a quilt for her with the birds in the air blocks. I think a bunch of them each made a block, sent them to one person and she put it together and quilted it. How nice is that! Shows you there are good people in this world that if you listen to the news, seems to be falling apart .
ReplyDeleteAnyway - books - love to read so a favorite author is hard but the one author that I check to see when the latest comes out and savor is a team - Lincoln child's and Douglas Preston. I've read all the books but the best are the Pendergadt series . Starting with the cabinet of curiosities. I love a good a good thriller mystery and these keep you on the edge of your seat (or couch as the case may be) lol! Not sure if a link will work on comments but here is one

Now the last book I read that I loved was a surprise to me because I usually don't like non fiction. I find they don't keep my attention but this one was so well written that I couldn't put it down. It is called the Immortal life of Henrietta Lacks. You must try it - excellent!
When I am not working on one of my many projects...different venues to keep me feeling complete...I am reading. My husband passed away four years ago this October 540th. Reading takes me to a place outside of mySelf. The authors I go back to time and again are Jennifer Chiaverini, Debbie Macomber, Sherryl Woods, Marie Bostwick, Terri Dulong, and others. I also have a collection of quilting and knitting books...novels, history, patterns, etc. I really appreciate the opportunity to receive one of Frances Dowell's new book. Thank you.

I enjoy Linda Castillo. I get on the wait list at the library before they are released. I also like Joanne Fluke for a nice easy read. Oh, and Sue Grafton! All are series, best read in order.
