I have made many bed sized quilts over the years but am primarily an art quilter now and working smaller. Working on large quilts is a challenge on me physically.
The joins are virtually invisible in the areas with the same backing fabric and it allowed me to more comfortably handle the work.You can see the join above because I backed the borders with different fabric so I could use my stash.
I made each block on the given month.
Snowmen have button eyes but no mouths, hence the title.

and notice the different snow fabrics. I had fun with my stash of snowy blues! Many of the 2.5" squares came from scrap bins and the others from yardage.

When they went on the quilt, they already had binding on them with an un-sewn tail left to join with the adjoining border.
It was so large and heavy with flannel backing that I saved myself by binding each border, as I went. The joins are invisible!
I'll use this method again.

It's beautiful! I love the name too :) I've never joined quilted sections together before, but it looks like a great way to work on such big quilts.

I really like your quilt. I am working on the current 2016 quiltdoodledoodles did you up size your quilt? I am finding myself a bit challenged working with 1.5 x 1.5 inch squares and it's only Febuary I have not even considered trying to fusy cut my fabrics just cutting them correctly is challenging enough. I do wish I had other blocks from her pervious patterns ( if they are the same size) that I could use instead of the hat and mitten blocks in this one . I just don't like the way they look in the picture right now perhaps they will grow on me or in fabric I may well find I like them.

ReplyDeleteFirst of all the quilt is adorable, but what a clever method of putting it together. I love that idea of binding the sections separately leaving a tail to join. Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteMagnificent quilt and finish! Know what you mean when you say you find large quilts physically challenging, it's not the piecing but the quilting which finished me off. Any real big ones would have to go out to be quilted now, or quilted broken down into sections.

ReplyDeleteYEA for a finish! Especially a UFO finish. I've been saving this year's BOM from Quilt Doodle Doodles but don't know if I will ever make it up. I tend to save a lot of BOMs and never do anything with them... sigh...

ReplyDeleteYour snowman quilt is great! I love that their noses are going in all directions, and do those mugs hold some nice rich hot chocolate? I bet they do :) Nice job with all of the little bits and bobs and embellishements - those were probably the most fun during the process!
