I have made many bed sized quilts over the years but am primarily an art quilter now and working smaller. Working on large quilts is a challenge on me physically.
This was quilted in 3 center sections, and 4 border sections, then put together.
The joins are virtually invisible in the areas with the same backing fabric and it allowed me to more comfortably handle the work. You can see the join above because I backed the borders with different fabric so I could use my stash.
this is a pic of the top half. Pattern source is QuiltDoodleDoodles from 2014 BOM.
I made each block on the given month.
This is the bottom half...
Snowmen have button eyes but no mouths, hence the title.

and notice the different snow fabrics. I had fun with my stash of snowy blues! Many of the 2.5" squares came from scrap bins and the others from yardage.
I love that snowflake on batik fabric...

When they went on the quilt, they already had binding on them with an un-sewn tail left to join with the adjoining border.
It was so large and heavy with flannel backing that I saved myself by binding each border, as I went. The joins are invisible!
I'll use this method again.
One post is here... quilted-mugs and others are monthly posts throughout 2014 under BOM's label

It's beautiful! I love the name too :) I've never joined quilted sections together before, but it looks like a great way to work on such big quilts.
ReplyDeleteLovely Leeanna! Looks cozy!
ReplyDeleteAmazing! Love the image effect in the mirror in the first picture!
ReplyDeleteWow! What a great job putting it all together! Still a few weeks of winter weather to enjoy such a grand quilt!

Looks great! I love the addition of the cows. Such a fun quilt.
ReplyDeleteI love it! Especially the snowmen and the cows!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have thought to do the binding before joining the sections. What a good idea!
Joining the quilted sections together was inspired, what a great quilt!
ReplyDeleteWould love you to link this up to this month's Ho, Ho, Ho and on We Sew Link Party too at http://celticthistlestitches.blogspot.fr/2016/02/ho-ho-ho-and-on-we-sew-sight-for-sore.html
I really like your quilt. I am working on the current 2016 quiltdoodledoodles did you up size your quilt? I am finding myself a bit challenged working with 1.5 x 1.5 inch squares and it's only Febuary I have not even considered trying to fusy cut my fabrics just cutting them correctly is challenging enough. I do wish I had other blocks from her pervious patterns ( if they are the same size) that I could use instead of the hat and mitten blocks in this one . I just don't like the way they look in the picture right now perhaps they will grow on me or in fabric I may well find I like them.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is really nice and huge...we have a double bed

What a super fun quilt -- congratulations on the finish!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI started that when Quilt Doodles was doing the quilt along and thought many times that I needed to get it done! So far that hasn't happened. Yours looks great..congrats!!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all the quilt is adorable, but what a clever method of putting it together. I love that idea of binding the sections separately leaving a tail to join. Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteMagnificent quilt and finish! Know what you mean when you say you find large quilts physically challenging, it's not the piecing but the quilting which finished me off. Any real big ones would have to go out to be quilted now, or quilted broken down into sections.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely yummy finish!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great fun quilt! I love it!
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt! So playful.
ReplyDeleteVery cute! I love the cows.
ReplyDeleteI love how this has turned out and how even though it is a huge quilt you still have your little art quilty touches in there.
ReplyDeleteYEA for a finish! Especially a UFO finish. I've been saving this year's BOM from Quilt Doodle Doodles but don't know if I will ever make it up. I tend to save a lot of BOMs and never do anything with them... sigh...
ReplyDeleteI have never been attracted to guild as you go because the joins were always so visible to me. But yours are fantastic! And to do the binding too--wow that's impressive. Great finish. Adorable quilt!
ReplyDeleteGreat to see this one done....love that you incorporated your love for words into it. Bed quilts are sometimes overwheleming huh....but oh so worth it. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is my favorite of the bom, so beautiful! And thanks for all your helpful tips, will definitely make it qayg.
ReplyDeleteWhoa...what a lovely work of art that will keep you all cozy and toasty this winter. Well done. Especially love that border! ღ
ReplyDeleteThis is a really fun quilt. I enjoyed reading about how you quilted all the sections and put it together.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a adorable quilt and one that will keep you warm and cozy for a long time, its great to take a UFO to a finsih.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on this big finish. The quilt is super cute!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to you!! It looks gorgeous
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful quilt and such a good idea to quilt it in manageable sections.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! And thanks for the link to the QAYG tutorial. I also don't like working on big pieces, so I will definitely use this technique when I am ready to finish up my quilts! Thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteKing size! Now that's an adventure in quilting. You pulled it off nicely. Love all the little personalized details in the blocks. Thanks for linking up at Podunk Pickin's.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty! I just love it! Thanks for sharing the tutorial....awesome!
ReplyDeleteA king size quilt is so big and difficult to handle - congratulations on such a nice finish! Thanks for sharing your finish and tips on MCM.
ReplyDeletei love that quilt, hugs
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful! I love it.
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful, Leeanna. Love the fun snowmen in particular.
ReplyDeleteYour snowman quilt is great! I love that their noses are going in all directions, and do those mugs hold some nice rich hot chocolate? I bet they do :) Nice job with all of the little bits and bobs and embellishements - those were probably the most fun during the process!
