Portable hexie transport system

It's hard to get a good shot of this project.
I have been slow stitching on this king sized hexie project for at least 10 years I think. It's my take along, car/bee sewing.
Can you see the safety pins? When I am ready to take the project with me on a trip, I lay the whole caboodle on the bed, lay out colors of hexis, then safety pin them to the section to be worked on and the whole quilt is in 5 sections at the moment.

This way I know what goes where when I'm sitting in a car or at bee, and can do the zen sewing while chatting.
In the picture above I am setting in the border blocks of the darker hexies. These run along the bed line around the whole quilt. It's taken on a life of it's own at this point, very close to completion.

This is a shot with the light pink petals already sewn into a unit, hanging around waiting to join the larger section.

Some are individual hexies pinned in place, some in groupings.

It's a way to organize it into being portable.

Don't you love a portable hand sewing project??

  1. I think the hexies may be my next take along, right now I am working a postage stamp quilt it's been a labor of love for a decade.

  3. Portable is the best!
Great idea for designing at home, and making it easy to take along!

  4. Are these hexies part of the project that's shown in your blog header? I was drawn to that photo the minute I saw it even though I'm not much of a hexie person (yet, but I'm thinking on it).

  5. It's a good thing to see that others work for years with their hexie quilts. So it's not me only. This will be a beautiful quilt in the end.

  6. Hi LeeAnna,
What a genious way to do this take a long! Wow! From what I see from these 3 photos, that must be one beautful quilt! Enjoythe process, how ever it long it takes! I'm sure you can tell stories, where and when, different parts of this quilt were sewn together!
    Take care,
    Joanne

  8. Oh just a perfect idea--you are so clever--I kept on having to re-lay out my hexies on my Monet's Garden--and forgetting how they went, taking pix after pix with my phone...ugh! It is therefore, hanging in my "closet of shame"--hopefully soon to be taken out and slow stitched in the car....thanks so much....hugs, Julierose

  12. What a neat way (and I mean that in two ways!) to organize this so you can take it along. I do love a portable hand sewing project, but I'm not big on EPP myself. I do small hand quilting projects. But I love to look at other people's EPPs. Yours is such a happy mix of colors.

  14. I love the idea of a slow-growing longterm project - like a bonsai, but with memories incorporated into the fabric.
    Lovely lovely quilt.

  15. A king-size hexie project? Wow. What a great way to keep your stitching in place with safety pins. I love zen stitching. It is so much better to take the time to be prepared than risk making frustrating and time consuming mistakes. I can't wait to see the end result of this project.

  16. Thanks for the tip! Great timing as I started my first EPP project two days ago and I was wondering how to keep the pieces in place while on the go!

  18. This is a great idea. I tend to mess up my own hexie designs but pinning them makes total sense. They're one of my favorite portable projects too. Love this quilt.
